Gregg is the closest thing we have to a closer. He's more proven than any of the other guys. at 2.5 mil a year, he's still a good bargain.

What guy came in and got quick outs prior to him? Frasor? Janssens?
Downs is a situational lefty.

I'm more hoping that someone jumps on the Wells bandwagon and wants to deal for him.

who would be willing to pay him? I see him on the Mets cause they're desperate

Vernon Wells will have negative trade value until his contract expires at the end of the 2014 season. Wells' deal is considered one of the worst in the game. After all, the three-time Gold Glover has $98.5MM coming his way even though his defense has deteriorated rapidly and he hasn't topped 20 homers in any season since 2006.

But Wells underwent successful wrist surgery last offseason, he's a year removed from the hamstring problems that sidelined him last spring and he has four home runs in his first six games. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports said this weekend that Wells would probably waive his no-trade clause. No team would take Wells on if it meant shouldering nearly $100MM, but GM Alex Anthopoulos could potentially find a team that would take on some of Wells' salary - it's a question of how much.

Toronto's supporters can still hope, though. If Wells hits well this year and has healthy enough legs underneath him to impress scouts and turn around his defensive numbers, teams may be willing to trade for Wells and pick up some of the money he's owed. Jerry Hairston Jr., Mark Kotsay and Rick Ankiel lead the next crop of free agent center fielders, so teams aren't about to find elite solutions on the open market. The Blue Jays will not be able to trade Wells without paying the vast majority of his contract, but they can dream about a deal that allows them to shed $10-20MM.

Still glad the Jays got rid of him but Rios is playing pretty good this year. No doubt if Wells' contract wasn't around he would still be a blue jay

Disagree the jays had to move on. The jays need to continue developing corner outfieders Snyder and Lind. When Rios still here that couldn't be done.

Quote:
SEATTLE (AP)—Ken Griffey Jr.(notes) retired Wednesday night, ending one of the great careers in baseball history.

The 40-year-old Griffey told the Mariners that he was done playing, and manager Don Wakamatsu made the announcement before Seattle faced Minnesota.

“While I feel I am still able to make a contribution on the field and nobody in the Mariners front office has asked me to retire, I told the Mariners when I met with them prior to the 2009 season and was invited back that I will never allow myself to become a distraction,” Griffey said in a statement.

“I feel that without enough occasional starts to be sharper coming off the bench, my continued presence as a player would be an unfair distraction to my teammates and their success as a team is what the ultimate goal should be,” he said.

Griffey was hitting only .184 with no homers and seven RBIs this year and recently went a week without playing. There was a report earlier this season— which Griffey denied—that he’d fallen asleep in the clubhouse during a game.

Griffey was a perennial All-Star outfielder and ranks fifth on the career home run list with 630. He won an MVP award and was a Gold Glover. The only thing missing on his resume was a trip to the World Series.

A star from the get-go, he played 22 years in the majors with Seattle, his hometown Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox. He hit .284 lifetime with 1,836 RBIs.

For a time in the 1990s, he was considered the best player in baseball. But then injuries began to take their toll and his production started to decline.

whoa whoa whoa.... back up. i despise ricciardi as much as anyone, but that move was viewed by just about everyone as an absolute steal for us to be able to get rid of rios' contract.

My favorite player all time. Was sad to see him get injury after injury with the Reds.

WOW. Lost it with 2outs. Ump called the runners safe on a bang-bang play at first base.

EDIT: Camera view just showed the runner was out. Ump just blew a perfect game. lol

That is going to be shown a lot of times and that ump is going to get it.

Jays up 2-1, Tampa scores to tie the game then the runner is called out for missing 3rd base.

Replay showed he touched the bag. lol

Photo of the Tiger-Indians play that will go down in history as the worst call ever by a ump

Clearly out and should of been a perfect game. Now I can't make fun of my friends that like the Indians.

can't believe we only got 2 runs off price..... we were seeing the ball really well and making good contact all night.

now we're gonna lose. i feel bad for marcum.... no way he should have been left out there that long. if cito had ANY confidence in the 'pen, he would have made the switch.
