MCKENZIE: MAPLE LEAFS REPORTEDLY FIRE BURKE AS GM

The Toronto Maple Leafs have apparently fired general manager Brian Burke, according to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie.

Burke had been the Maple Leafs' president and general manager since November 29, 2008.

Burke's NHL career began in Vancouver in 1987 when he was hired by Pat Quinn to be the director of hockey operations for the Canucks.

In 1993, he left the job to become GM of the Hartford Whalers before stepping down after one just one season to join the NHL front office as executive vice president and director of hockey operations.

In 1998, he returned to Vancouver to become general manager of the Canucks and following the 2003-04 season, Canucks ownership chose not to renew his contract.

Burke then became general manager of the Anaheim Ducks, where he won the Stanley Cup in the 2006-07 NHL season. He stepped down as GM in 2008 and joined the Maple Leafs shortly thereafter, replacing interim GM Cliff Fletcher.

Burke was also the general manager for the United States national men's ice hockey team for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Not surprising, he's been a disaster. My guess is Colangelo is next.

fancylad 01-09-2013 02:07 PM

the timing of this is really strange. There must have been some big fight or disagreement or something that went down.

My guess is there was disagreement about maybe a Luongo move or Burke wouldn't anmesty one or more of his terrible contracts out of principle or something.

Spoke to a friend of mine that know's stuff, asked what happens, answer "lots". I told him I was completely surprised, he added "new bosses man"

I wouldn't be even a bit surprised if BC was next.

Burke has been a disaster. And i agree, BC is likely next. Surprised they aren't doing a joint firing. lol

Guess they promote Nonnis?

Superjudge 01-09-2013 03:02 PM

Jeff, all due respect, you have no clue if thats what you believe. Brian Burke has done a good job... not perfect, nope. But he inherited a fucking disaster, and he's made some serious headway turning that around.

I'd actually like to hear why you make this claim....and please, do better than the Kessel trade, because last I looked Kessel was a top ten scorer in the NHL, and his line mate, who was acquired for carrots, is even better than him.

Sorry but that Kessel deal was ridiculous at that time as he was blowing up the team. He extended Wilson then fired him a few months later, which is a real head scratcher. Does this team have a true number one Goaltender after him being here 5yrs? Who is the second line Center? Phaneuf as captain? Building around Truculance. Hasn't brought in a big name FA. Hasn't drafted a stud. Unwillingness to do a true rebuild. Saying in his first season that the goal was playoffs, no long term vision/plan. Refusal to even discussing a 5yr plan or long term plan was stupid when he was first brought here. Him publicly saying that he wanted to aquire the number pick (tavares) and not geting it done. Building a suspect defense. His love for american collegiate players.

Disaster might be a little strong, but i don't think so.
