Default Hockey tough sell to new Canadians

Quote:
Hockey in Scarborough is dying, the victim of a changing population that prefers to play soccer, cricket and even badminton.

The head of the Scarborough Hockey Association, which has ruled the sport in the area for 53 years, warned local politicians this week that organized minor hockey could be dead within two years.

In a blunt speech that was part funeral oration, part Old Testament prophecy, John Kelloway said hockey organizations have failed to attract immigrants to the game – partly because it has become too expensive and partly because of the assumption Canadian kids will always play the game.

Fifteen years ago, Kelloway's association had 10,000 players. Today there are just 2,800.

"Hockey as we have known it – neighbourhood house league programs and a vibrant Scarborough Hockey Association competitive division – will be a thing of the past ... if we don't fix it now," Kelloway said.

hockey is WAY too expensive for parents/families who are budget conscious, nevermind for new imigrant parents who are just starting out in Canada. and frankly i don't see what any hockey association could or would do about it.

Basketball is HUGE in Scarborough. Back when I was playing AAU ball, Scarborough was winning national championships and fielding 3-4 teams in most age brackets. I'm not sure why it wasn't mentioned...

It's not that people from Scarborough have a "hate-hockey" complex, but the majority of its residents are new immigrants and simply can't afford the costs that hockey entails. Toronto isn't a hockey town anymore - it's not neccessarily because of a paradigm shift, it's because the demographic has changed drastically. And like fancy said, there isn't much that minor hockey can do. It's not that hockey has lost its appeal, it's just becoming less accessible to more people.

I think it's a combination of lack of accessibility and the fact that Hockey has lost some people, myself and some friends included. More then at any other time before, the leafs aren't the only game in town and with Toronto FC, Toronto Raptors and combined with many incoming immigrant in the last 10+yrs being more interested in those games have made a big difference.

Hockey will always rule the sports landscape in Canada, but let's just hope that in the future there is far more balance. Because right now in sports media in this country it's 80% Hockey talk and 20% everything else. And that's ashame.

ice hockey is the best sport in the world..... unless you don't know how to skate.

I would be curious to know how many of these kids in scarborough are playing ball/street hockey.

They had an article a couple months back about the breakdown of the average leaf fan in the city and it was predominantly white males and the average age was getting older.

Hockey is in trouble.

I think Toronto FC is going to have INSANELY expensive seats one day soon.

I played hockey for 10 yrs growing up and used to get pissed anytime i missed a leaf game, and would even tape some of them. But i'm part of the so called change as well, i'm an Ex fan of the sport. I grew up interested in many different sports and now Hockey is just near or at the bottom of the list when it used to be at the top. Oh, how things have changed! And it always kills me, when i talk to a few of my friends that still care about hockey about preffering Basketball/Baseball, and they look at me like i have 3 heads.

The utter disbelief they show is just too funny.

I agree, the younger audience is less and less interested in Hockey in this country.
