no offense intended, but the last thing anyone wants to see on the golf course is a person in front of them that absolutely doesn't know how to play. you really need to practice first at a driving range and make sure you know how to hit the ball. from there you can play at a par 3 to practice your skills around the green. once you can confidently make contact and make a chip and a putt, even if you are shitty at it, you are ready to try playing on a real course. the game just takes too long for a person with no idea how to play to be on there in the miidst of everyone else.
Yep, I know. That's why I asked.

That's also why I haven't played yet.

if you can hit the ball confidently, try the par 3 at dentonia. it's pretty laid back.

I'd definitely hit the driving range a few times before going... I used to go a lot, but I assume I'm complete crap now!

I'd definitely hit a par 3 in your city/town. I know with the one here, there are definitely some hacks, and it's somewhat expected. Most people know, going in to a par 3 that you're not necessarily dealing with pros. If you're taking WAY too long, just pick up your ball and carry on to the next hole (that's what she said?).

Also, just show up at your tee time maybe a few minutes early, and if the group behind you is there already, just explain to them that it's your first time. Most people appreciate that.

Its wierd, if I go to a driving range, I can hit a ball farther (ALWAYS) but slice it like crazy every time as well (usually 275-300). Yet on a golf course, I hit it dead straight but not quite as far (probably about 200-225 yards). I've played golf since I was 11 so its kinda wierd.

Not necessarily too weird. At a driving range, most people just line their balls up and hit them (yeah, yeah, I know...), however, on the golf course, you only have one shot.

Most peoples' swing is thrown off by too fast of a back-swing, and that's usually what happens when you try and blast through a large bucket of balls - not to mention most of the balls at driving ranges have nicks out of all of them; overemphasizing trajectories.

You're also probably not trying to pound the ball as hard as you can on the course, knowing that a slice is a possible outcome. The combination of you slowing down your swing a tiny bit, being cognizant of your slice is probably all you need to keep that drive straight.

I'd rather be straight off of the tee, so sometimes I just tee up my 4 iron, and try and get ~225 down the fairway, as opposed to ~275-300, but off into the rough.

On long holes is where I get into trouble, as I try and make up all of that yardage in a couple of swings, and it usually gets me into trouble. Sounds like when you're at a driving range, you kind of do the same thing. Next time you go, instead of rushing through the bucket, try and play every shot like you're playing on a course, and see what happens.

There was a famous golfer who said something like that, you have to practice all of your good habits, and hit every shot as if it counts and it's for real.

oversized clubs, especially Drivers have gotten out of hand. Get out your crusty, mouse poop wood clubs and play some real golf. Wimps

That was exactly my issue - I didn't want to be a pain in the ass for the people behind me. I would definitely have to play my first time as a fun "learning" experience, and move on like you said.

Someday.

anyone watching the us open? mcilroy can't blow this lead, can he? augusta has to be looming in his memory, but 8 strokes on the final day with no tiger in the tourney? surely that's as close to unbeatable as you can be.

El Tigre back on top in the PGA. 3rd win of the year before July. Congrats Tiger, although you made your own bed, you did indeed sleep in it as well, time to forgive, forget, and move on.
