Do baseball players not where jocks anymore? I mean, I know they don't help that much, but its better than nothing.

thought 07-23-2010 11:32 AM

Windex 07-23-2010 11:35 AM

Yeah i would imagine they do. But i know one thing, i played 18yrs of competetive ball and i've been hit while wearing a cup and it basically depends where it hits. If it's hit at the bottom portion........OUCHHHHH! I remember playing hockey when i was around 14 and i forgot my cup, go figure someone took a shoot and it grazed me in that area and thought i was gonna puke!

Shadowfax 07-23-2010 11:36 AM

holy Jebus...that HAD to hurt

Acie 07-23-2010 11:44 AM

For the record, he wasn't wearing a cup.

But even after seeing how bad it looked, and knowing how incredibly horrible it felt, when the Tampa Bay Rays star left fielder was struck, well, there, by an errant pickoff throw early in Tuesday night's loss to the Orioles, Crawford insisted he has no plans to start wearing a protective cup when he returns to the field, possibly Friday in Cleveland.

"I'm just not going to wear a cup," Crawford said. "I just don't think that's going to happen again. It never happened in eight years, so I'm not going to worry about letting that one little incident make me change the way I do things. ... If it happens again, then it just happens again."

Crawford said he tried wearing one early in his career and found it too restrictive. "It pinches me when I run," he said. "I take off on a steal, I make diving catches, something can happen worse from wearing a cup."

disagree. cups can be very dangerous. rugby and football players don't wear one because you can dislocate your hip if you fall the wrong way, or, as crawford suggested, you can pinch a nut between the cup and the leg which can lead to a complete rupture. a cup makes sense in hockey because it's hella dangerous with blocking shots, but i fully understand why ball players and football/rugby players don't wear one.

i don't know man...i have too much respect for my family jewels...i'd wear one no matter what sport
i remember a buddy of mine taking a lacrosse ball to that area back when i was a kid (no cup)...he was down for a LONG time and in extreme pain
i vowed to never take chances after that

Barracuda 07-23-2010 12:36 PM

This is why you gotta wear em on the inside.

Just sayin'. :p

Gurk 07-23-2010 12:59 PM

O gawd that has to hurt. But I don't get he wasn't wearing a jock :face4:

Claudius 07-23-2010 01:06 PM

While getting hit in the nuts is painful I'll still argue that the worst pain i experienced was a high speed shin to shin collision.

Acie 07-23-2010 01:10 PM

The worst pain I've ever felt was playing road hockey and getting my stick caught in the curb and butt-ending myself right in the wedding tackle.

A close second was when I was a catcher and a batter fouled off a pitch that went backwards and bounced off the ground and then right into the groin region...no cup either.

Pretty stupid, but I just couldn't do it.

It was way too restrictive.

Dark Knight 07-23-2010 01:35 PM

Haha C'mon Acie. I'm a catcher too, and I wouldn't dare play without my cup. :p
