Default Canadian Hockey Coverage...

Does anyone else find this extremely annoying? "We're" (and I put that in quotes because it ain't I!) obsessed with hockey news. Trade deadline coverage is a perfect example. Who cares? Nothing much happens in the post lockout era. These outlets - TSN and Sportscrap - have panels of 100 hockey experts yammering on about trades of no consequence.

It reached the pinnacle of absurdity a few months ago when TSN ran a story on who might play for Canada in the 2010 Winter Olympics. 2010!!! Almost three years away!!!

YES.

I find it extremely annoying. beyond annoying actually.

What kills me is that i'm a big soccer fan. Even in Toronto which arguably has the best supported soccer team in the MLS, there is little to no coverage on Toronto FC during the soccer season.

But even during the NHL offseason, there is so much hockey coverage that it kills me.

It boggles the mind.

It's because of people like my dad, who despite me telling him I could give a crap about hockey anymore, insists on talking to me about what a great style of hockey the Detroit Red Wings play each time I have a conversation with him. Multiply that by 10 million and therein lies the problem.

Although to his credit he tries talking basketball with me too now and for some strange reason he has NBA League Pass.

For me, it's getting to the point where if there is a hockey game on television, I won't bother to watch. I'd rather watch a re-run of Restaurant Makeover on Food TV.

yup. i've been there for a few years now.

Survivor man, Mantracker, any good HGTV or Foodnetwork show versus hockey, and hockey loses the battle every night.

Overexposure can definately hurt a product.

As for restaurant makeover, their getting pretty close to overexposure as well. That show runs all the freaking time. It's starting to become the new hockey.

True, true, Restaurant makeover does have over-exposure. It plays on HGTV as well. They should show more of Chef At Home, Iron Chef (not the American one - even if it is a Sea Urchin battle every night), Throwdown with Bobby Flay and dare I say it - Barefoot Contessa...

Or Manswers would be good...as would be anything with Mike Holmes.

Restaurant Makeover's become a bit of a joke. I mean, I do watch every episode but it's so staged and follows the same pattern each time. I big chunk of those restaurants close down after the makeover and almost none of them utilize the new menu. I think the owners are of the mindset that it's the cheapest advertising you can buy. The production company's been sued due to Igor's shoddy work and the chefs are such arrogant assholes who really have no right to be.

Gordon Ramsay though! What an awesome individual. The original UK version of Kitchen Nightmares is brilliant.

+1.

gordon Ramsay is the man. That is the best show on the foodnetwork and one of my favorite shows on television. I have yet to see a bad episode. Has anyone seen the American version of the show though? Let's just say it's a little over the top with the production and the music. It's entertaining no doubt, but much cheesier than the UK one.

BTW., i too have noticed a few of the restaurant makeover establishments closing down after the show - the first one that comes to mind is "jeremiah Bullfrogs" on queen st.

restaurant makeover almost singlehandedly destroyed the best little restaurant in my neighbourhood (Grapefruit Moon). The designers are absolute morons who always fail to see the demographic of the restaurant's clientele and try turn turn it into a cookie-cutter girly place... it wasn't until the Moon spent a buinch of money to undo the changes are revert back to the old menu that they regained the trust of the neighbourhood.

Ramsay's show is good (the US version is way over dramatic and shitty, though), but he's an arrogant prick. He's right most of the time, but he treats the kitchen staff like garbage. I'd stab that bastard witha fork if he talked to me like that.

i don't know. He is arrogant yes, and he is confrontational. But often times in his show (especially the UK ones) he is very fair and constructive. I find he's only ever a real asshole to people who warrant it. Some people just don't react well to criticism.

Either way, he is entertaining as hell.

As for restautant makeover, i often wonder why people would go on that show. I saw that Grapefruit Moon episode the first thing i wondered was why on earth she even went on the show when her sence of style and decor was so drastically unique. I could see it helping a few places that desperately need it (that Tara Inn place in Scarborough for one), but at the same time, some of the owners should consider other options to revamp their businesses. you are totally right though, in that the result of the makeover usually lacks soul and personality.

I would agree with fancy in regards to Ramsay and his UK version of Kitchen Nightmares. He's only confrontational when he feels people are being lazy and sloppy with food and I understand where's he coming from. He loves food that much, sees it as an art even, and he sees these people who didn't take the time to learn their craft. Extremely frustrating. But yes in his UK version far more constructive and hell even nicer. I still remember an empisode where he ended up playing football with the chef and sous chef.

But yeah, Chef at Home is where it's at for me. 7:30 right there.

Then 8? I'd go with fancy again, right to OLN, either survivorman, mantracker or even the odd "how not to die" episode.

BTW, screw hockey on t.v. every freaking minute. Christ, I think that new kid just played his first game for the LEAFS, every damn minute of every segment on the FAN on the ride home was about this kid. I'm tired of it.

how not to die... That show is hilarious and brilliant all in one. Saw it once, and i'll definately watch it again.

You lost me with Chef at Home though. sorry. but i hate that Michael Smith with a passion. He's up there with Michael Kuss, Dr. Phil, Mike Toth, and Katherine Humphries as my most hated television personalities.

Michael Smith is weird. He's got those crazy eyes. His son is a doofus. There's something up with that whole family. I bet when the cameras stop rolling, he tells his wife and kid off, runs outside, gets naked and climbs up a tree. His kid then throws up whatever disgusting concoction his dad whipped up and his wife retreats to a corner to suffer her daily nervous breakdown.

"Well, I'll get you more pumpkin and I'll ram it right up your f---ing a--. Would you like it whole or diced?"

back to hockey lol..

i am a huge soccer fan..its my number 1 sport...that said i respect the fact that people watch other sports and so am fine with equal tv time for hockey, basketball, curling, whatever....

but the hockey coverage here is fucking disgusting...its borderline stalkerish and i have to admit im jealous....i wish soccer was treated the same way on tv...but no....in sports centre like shows they tend to show like every hockey goal highlight, save, fight and zambonie scene possible. When it comes to soccer, they will show 1 goal maybe 2 from a game taht was 4- 2. Heck, they barely show Raptors highlights!

As for all the trade deadline shows, and over analysis....get a fucking life people...i mean i LOVE soccer as much as any puck head loves and is dedicated to hockey..but man, i dont need to hear the BS they gossip about with rumours, scenarios and "analysis" of why crosby is not better then malkin or greztky in his prime balhblah...who cares.

ya, i hate hockey coverage in canada. become more worldy with sports!

dont complain jattdog, at least you get a little about other sports. Here in Spain you get soccer, and soccer, and soccer and also soccer. In Madrid the debates on TV about Real Madrid are like the politics ones. Its insane.

sounds just like how they treat hockey in Canada. We really get little to no soccer coverage (see my first post).

And it's really lame, becuase we all now know that the soccer market is quite big in Toronto/Canada. Bigger than people thought it would be.
