MONTREAL - It's been a wild career path for Jonathan Duhamel these last few years: Factory worker. College dropout. And, now, high-stakes poker millionaire.

The transformation culminated Monday night when the 23-year-old Montrealer won the World Series of Poker main event title in Las Vegas and US$8.94 million.

"It's a dream come true right now," Duhamel told the crowd at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino as confetti fell from a theater ceiling. "It's like the most beautiful day of my life."

I'm not one of those people that goes into a thread and starts raining on a parade, but I totally don't understand why Poker is so popular as a spectator sport.

It's only kinda entertaining to watch when top players are playing. Ivey, Dwan, Negreanu etc.

Montral man wins World Series of Poker (8.94Mil)

LAS VEGAS — Quebec poker professional Jonathan Duhamel said he worked a series of bad jobs before getting into cards and making his living online at tables with $5 and $10 minimums.

Now — if he wants — the Montrealer might never have to work again.

Duhamel won the World Series of Poker title and $8.94 million on Monday night, becoming the first Canadian to take down the no-limit Texas Hold 'em main event in Las Vegas.

``It is surreal. I could never dream of that. It's so huge — so big — it's a dream come true for me,'' Duhamel said after winning the gold bracelet. ``I don't know what to think right now, I don't even know what I feel. It's just — it's amazing.''

Duhamel, who said poker has been his primary income for the past two years, was spending the night partying like a high roller with 125 friends and family in a suite at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Many in his group donned Montreal Canadiens jerseys in an ode to their hometown NHL team.

Duhamel told The Canadian Press is was important to be surrounded by family and friends.

``It was very important, they helped me a lot (and) when they're cheering for you, you know what you're doing is very important,'' he said.

``I was very happy they were there behind me — they helped me a lot.''
