All's fair in the olympics.

Ovechkin's style of play is going to catch up to him in time. He can't play that rough and tumble style play all the time. It's going to take it's toll on his body.

Is that your opinion or are you reading that on ESPN or FoxSports? Are you aware that the Canadian women have won the last 2 olympic gold medals in hockey?

I'll make you an avatar bet for the women's game. You on? I think the Canadians will win.

We don't have the overall medal count that the US does but in terms of the proportion of gold medals to total medals we're doing better than most countries. I'd be happy with the gold medal lead at the end of this week.

shouldn't the number of golds be the determining factor for best country? total medals should be used as a tiebreaker

i'll take that bet for an american victory
Im cheering for Canada though

Also, Canada has 10% of the US's population.

U.S. has 25% of China's pop and Norway's pop is a lot less than Canada's

I realize that. Sheer population isn't as big of a deal in the Olympics as it is in team sporting competitions because you only need one incredible athlete to do produce tangible results in 95% of the events. Population gives you depth of talent but it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to outperform the rest of the field in terms of medals. It increases your chances but there isn't a direct correlation.

Doesn't seem to me like Canada factored in the Canadian population when coming up with the "Own the Podium" slogan.

Also, Canada sent a huge team of Olympians to the games. Pretty much on par with the number of athletes that USA sent.

Although i should clarify that i don't care that much about this own the podium stuff or the number of medals that Canada has won so far. I think we've been pretty good at the Olympics actually.

chin up. two years will come soon enough.... and then same with the two years after that.

I like the way the Olympics are spaced out. It keeps fans appreciating them properly by the time they roll around again. Same thing for all the major international team sports competitions.

I gotta say, it felt like the Beijin games were just yesterday.

Canada isn't too competitive in the summer games though, would love to see fortunes change

they're competitive enough. Usually good for 15-20 medals in the summer games.

Not that medals are everything. I always just find the Olympics a cool event to watch regardless who wins.

A US first grade teacher explains to her class that she is an American. She asks her students to raise their hands if they are American too.
Not really knowing why but wanting to be like their teacher, their hands explode into the air like flashy fireworks. There is, however, one exception. A girl named Kristen has not gone along with the crowd.
The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different. "Because I am not an American."
"Then", asks the teacher, "What are you?".
"I'm a proud Canadian," boasts the little girl.
The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks Kristen why she is a Canadian.
"Well, my mom and dad are Canadians, so I'm a Canadian too.
"The teacher is now really angry. "That's no reason," she says loudly. "What if your mom was a crappy hockey player, and your dad was a crappy hockey player? Would that mean that you're a crappy hockey player too?"
A pause, and a smile. Then, says Kristen, "Nope! That'd mean I'm an American!"
