They've caught up. They were catching up 20-30yrs ago.

I heard Gord Miller say that Canadian fans were singing the Canadian anthem last night outside of a restuarant to American players. I guess this is what you get. Canada's been beat by the US before and didn't even medal 4yrs ago. The sheer arrogance is funny.

Yup. Miller was AWESOME, just like Hiller was the other night. Yet AGAIN Canada massively outshot their opponent. This tournament will probably be won and lost by the goalies. All the top 6 or 7 teams (Swedes, Fins, Russians, US, Czechs, Canada, Slovaks) have some solid NHL forwards with a high skill level and the ability to score, so I think it will come down to goaltending. Canada has depth, but the other teams can match their top 2 scoring lines, especially Russia and Sweden. Even though Brodeur was good in the shootout against the Swiss, and he stopped a couple of breakaways tonight, at times, Marty looked really careless and seemed to lack focus. I wonder if they'll start Luongo next game.

Yeah, I totally agree with you on that, Jeff. When I heard that story, I was thought to myself, "you fucking douchebags!" It's important to have confidence in yourself, but actions speak louder than words. It's not just a fucking cliche. Settle it on the ice.

The story reminded me of Cheryl Miller at the 2002 FIBA World Championships when she insisted that nobody could touch the US. The Americans talked a lot of trash at that tourny, too. As die hard basketball fans know, the US lost more than once in that tournament. If I'm not mistaken, they didn't even win a medal.

Wow tonight was just sad. I bet we are gonna lose to Germany. We suck. I didn't belive in Broduer(sp?) from the moment he stepped on ice vs. the Swiss. He has too much of a tendancy to go out and play the puck which really kills us. All those fans are gonna be hating on Canada so much tonight. Last place here we come

The US didn't medal 4 years ago either...and Team Canada won Gold in Salt Lake City.

Karma is a bitch though

Only people who know next to nothing about hockey think Canada is way ahead of the pack in a tournament like this. Canada has more depth than most nations, but at the Olympics, all you need is 3 lines of quality NHL talent and a great goalie to stand a chance at winning the Gold.

When it comes to depth, Canada still is ahead of the pack by quite a margin, and that's why Canada is still quite dominant at the World Junior tournament. Again, anybody who knows anything about hockey recognizes that. At the Juniour level, you have to draw talent from a 3 year age range, but at the Olympics you can pull players from an age range of 15-18 years between the youngest and oldest. Thus, your country just needs to produce 1 or 2 good NHL calibre players per year, in order to have the talent pool to field a competitive Olympic team. Canada could field 5 or 6 quality Olympic teams.

No. Russia caught up to Canada 30 years ago, but many other countries hadn't caught up until the late 90s. What you see in international hockey is similar to what you see in international basketball, except what's happening in hockey took place a little earlier than basketball, since euros entered the NHL earlier than they did the NBA.

Right now, a number of teams can challenge the Americans in basketball in a 1 game elimination tournament. Nothing is easy for the Americans now. If they don't send their best, they'll have trouble winning a medal. In Basketball, the US has the deepest talent pool, but the gap between their best TEAM and other countries' best teams, is not that great. As the years pass, european basketball teams are just going to get deeper and deeper. The same might apply to the big South American countries, like Brazil and Argentina.

30 years ago USA won gold and in 96 i believe, beat Canada in the world cup of Hockey or was that still called the Canada cup i forget. I'm not saying they all were better then us 30 years ago, but it slowly started 30 years ago and really they caught up fully in the mid 90's.

The game was a 60 minute power play for the Canadians. Forget the lopsided shots...they had twice as many that missed the net.

The difference was Miller and the US resilience.

Love to see a US vs Canada final.

Um, Jeff, this goes back to the conversation earlier in the thread. In 1980, Russia was sending its best players to the Olympics, the US and Canada did not. That's why they call it the MIRACLE on ice. The US team was a bunch of college kids. Their best players were guys like Neal Broten. So, using the 1980 win as a benchmark for catching up is wrong. It may have initiated more interest in hockey, but the US hadn't really caught up. College kids playing over their heads is not catching up. The Miracle on ice spawned more interest in hockey amongst Americans, but that depth never manifested itself until the mid to late 90s. Yes, the 96' loss to the US is technically the "mid" 90s, so I'll grant you that..one year from the "late" 90s. However, that Canadian team was missing the best player in the world...Mario Lemieux. He was on the ice in 2002 when Canada easily beat the US in the Gold medal game. I said late 90's because that's when several teams other than Russia had demonstrated they could play with Canada, if we didn't have our best players. By the late 90s, the Czechs could run 3 solid lines and had the best goalie in the world. The Swedes started to have a lot of quality depth, although they had shit goaltending (they now have a good goalie). That was my point. When you say the "world" caught up, you have to be able to point to more than a couple of countries. Prior to the late 90s, if the best players were involved, it was never really a legitimate 4-6 team race, like it definitely is now.
