Talking Canada losing interest in Hockey?

Canada's love of hockey waning: survey finds

We are defending against this attack now

By Misty Harris, Canwest News ServiceAugust 7, 2009

While hockey may still be the country's favourite, compared with other sports, Reginald Bibby, a sociologist at the University of Lethbridge, notes that the sheer number of choices reduces the actual numbers of avid followers.Photograph by: Andy Clark, Reuters, Canwest News ServiceIt seems a heretical claim to make at a time when there is a high-stakes fight over bringing a U. S. hockey franchise to Canada, but a new sociological survey suggests that interest in the National Hockey League has been declining over the past two decades.

"It's one of the few Canadian myths we have, this alleged [nationwide] love of hockey," says Reginald Bibby, a sociologist at the University of Lethbridge, who says his findings debunk the myth.

The largest proportion of fan losses is occurring among teenagers, in a trend which he says calls into question the game's endurance as our national winter sport. "We can no longer take it for granted that growing up in Canada means you're going to be in love with hockey, or with the NHL specifically," said Prof. Bibby, whose findings draw on a nationally representative sample of more than 5,500 teens.

Between 1990 and 2005, the percentage of adults who "very" or "fairly" closely follow the NHL dropped to 30% from 36%. Among teens, fandom during the 1992 to 2008 period--fell fully 10 points, to 35% from 45%.

Prof. Bibby says the findings, published in his new book The Emerging Millennials, suggest that immigration patterns, as well as the explosion of entertainment options, are reprogramming the national DNA.

His sociological explanation for the phenomenon is that the "death of the monoculture" has led to a splintering of individual interests, with more consumer choices leading to fewer pastimes that are truly embraced on a national level.

While hockey may still be the country's favourite, compared with other sports, he notes that the sheer number of choices reduces the actual numbers of avid followers.

According to the research, it is not just hockey that suffering; the findings demonstrate that professional sports of every stripe are losing their appeal among young supporters.

In the early 1990s, 33% of teens followed Major League Baseball compared with just 10% today; youth interest in the National Basketball Association is lower now (21%) than before the league expanded into Canada (27%); and football has seen teen fan decreases in both the American and Canadian leagues -- a drop to 19% from 26% for the NFL, and to 14% from 22% for the CFL.

Although an impressive one million Canadians tuned in to some part of the recent NHLdraft, Prof. Bibby said this only represents about three per cent of Canada's "hockey-mad" population.

In Toronto, youth support for professional hockey was conspicuously lower than in any of Canada's six NHL cities: 20% of teens, compared with 34% in Edmonton, 41% in Ottawa-Gatineau, 44 % in Vancouver, 45% in Montreal and 48% in Calgary.

Prof. Bibby suggests these regional differences stem from a combination of the Toronto Maple Leafs' poor performance, game inaccessibility, and higher immigration rates.

According to his research, four in 10 Canadian teens with Canadian-born parents followed pro hockey either "very" or fairly" closely. Among those born here but whose parents were born elsewhere, the proportion dropped to one-third.

For teens born outside Canada, interest bottomed out at one in five.
Hopefully it keeps going down and there is more balanced and intelligent sports broadcasters in this country.

I know i have lost interest after almost 30yrs of being obsessed with the sport and i know a few people that stopped watching altogether as well. I was listening to the fan today and they were discussing this and some were calling in and saying that their kids have more interest in soccer and basketball then hockey and that the media is way too oversaturated with hockey and it has turned them off. Hockey is still the #1 sport in Canada unfortunately, but the numbers make sense for several reason. Mainly that there are so many things out there to get interested in that hockey isn't the be all end all anymore, thakfully.

whatever.

Fuck that.

The only reason Hockey is losing grip is because more options are becomming available at less expensive costs, period. As a sport it's still huge for those who play. Early teens has ALWAYS been when mot kids quit and lose interest, it's the cut off point for either going ahead trying to go pro, or packing it in and taking up beer and sex.

This isn't new.

A lot of you guys think it's so great that Hockey is being reduced. Why? It's only happening because of the economy, are you happy about that? Are you happy that we are becomming so much more poor that we can no longer maintain attendance in out national sport because it's becomming too expensive to do so?

How many of you who hate the game have played the game?

I play now.
I play hoops too.

I LOVE them both. I hate that Ice Hockey is tumbling in popularity because of costs. You think an Indian kid off the boat or plane wouldn't absolutely LOVE the game if there was opportunity to play? Asian kids? Any Minority group for that matter?

There is nothing about the actual game that is making kids lose interest, it's all opportunity. Period.

I think it's a shame to see kids on here tearing into this sport, or cheering it's demise. Very rich parts of our heritage are intertwined woth this sport, and contrary to the article, our actual national identity is intertwined. MANY polls done over the last 30 years have shown that a consistant unifying theme that has surfaced in cross canada polling about national indentity and unity has been in fact the game of hockey. That may or may not be good, but it is what it is. I'm not particularily happy that that will change so we can adopt the games of immigrants out of our economic short falls.

Sure, but isn't it better to have a balanced sports lanscape. Love Hockey all you want, and it will likely always be our main sport, at least until our parents/grandparents are gone. But for the people that aren't hockey mad and that number is growing, it's not that fair to have 80% hockey talk to those people, which actuall has got some people hating on the sport. It's the middle of summer and there's more talk of "the Monster" then there is any other summer sport currently playing including baseball. Growing up i taped games if i was going to not watch it and everyone i knew was a puckhead. Now, i know very few that even watch games anymore. And if anything, they flip to the game here & there to see the score but barely watch a combined period. Alot has changed. I don't know one kid that plays ball hockey on the street anymore...not one. Everyone used to play that.

I know kids that still play boxball and that also go out and shoot hoops in there driveway. You're right about video games and internet and the loads of other entertainment out there. I just wonder where Hockey will be in 20+yrs when the middle aged and elderly people who make up most of the puckheads out there die off and the younger generations who are currently interested in other things grow up getting their kids into other activities other then Hockey.

I think you have to take into consideration that there are still hundreds (thousands?) of communities across Canada where hockey is everything.

Yeah, kids in urban centres have a lot of choices.... but I can tell you that in my community, hockey participation is growing every year. So I'd hold off on the death knell for now.

I never said hockey will die. And i don't dispute your first point at all. BTW i'm from a small town and am there alot and my points still apply there. All i'm saying is that overall in this country less kids are interested in hockey then they used to be for various obvious reasons (other sports, video games, internet...). And that's a good thing, this is a divers country and the sports landscape should start to reflect that, even though i won't hold my breath. Hockey fans in this country get defensive whenever stuff like this comes up, it's kinda funny to me. Hockey isn't going anywhere obviously.

I don't know about where you live, but I know a lot of people that organize soccer games at a park near my house. In fact me and friends usually start a heated game of soccer after our wrist's start hurt from shooting jumpers.
