Shows what can happen when the government and organized crime push a sport.

:)

The NFL, where Gambling happens.

the sample size for that poll is only 2,237 which seems very small to me given that this is microscopically small in reflection the actual number of american sports fans. I don't think this data hold much weight.

Superjudge 01-27-2012 09:15 AM

only need a small sample for it to actually be relevant. Thats actually pretty massive for most polls Fancy, and if it was spread out over the entire nation than its accurate.

Basketball and Hockey are equal.

Cuz they are the same game in many respects

Yeah, polls are always pretty small sample size. Which is why they're often off and why they usally come with a disclaimer saying that the results may vary by 3-5%. The thing that shows more is probably ratings.

Superbowl- not sure but I guess it's in the 90Mil range
World Series- averaged 28Mil viewers
NBA Finals- averaged 22Mil viewers (likely up b/c Miami was in)
NHL Finals- averaged 5-6Mil viewers (and that's with most of boston watching)

Windex 01-27-2012 09:38 AM

Super Bowl 2011 - 111 million viewers
World Series 2011 - average of 16.6 mil - Final game 26 mil
NBA Finals 2011 - average of 17.3 million people over the six games - Final game 24 mil
NHL Finals - four NBC games averaged 6.1 million viewers + 4 mil CBC

Thanks. Shit I could swear Baseball was a lot higher. But to me, the ratings show more than polling a couple thousand people.

so more than one in three people in the US watch the Superbowl? That seems a bit skewed. I think there is a difference between the football game and the cultural event that might get glanced at during the party or whatever.

hockey numbers look normal but i have to admit i'm surprised by the basketball percentage...thought it would be double that

gotta agree that the ratings numbers are probably more accurate

this is just for favorite though
I bet a lot of the NFL or MLB guys rank NBA as 2nd or 3rd while hockey is more polar... 1st or 4th

Hockey is one of the sports in the US that seems the most localized. In other words, they'll watch their team but are not "hockey fans" like you see here where they'll watch hockey no matter who is playing. I would say outside of Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia (IMO Phily has more hockey fans than basketball fans) who i think have true hockey fans i just don't know how many hockey fans there are that will watch it because they love it whether it's their local team or not outside of those markets, maybe Minnesota, NY? Moreso than the other sports, at least that's how it seems. NFL fans watch 8hrs of football every sunday all over the country no matter who is playing, same with baseball and Basketball obviously to a much lesser extent.

Personally i have a hard time watching any sport if the match doesn't involve (or directly affect) a team i cheer for. I won't/can't do it.
