doesn't it rain a lot in Vancouver?
the place was renovated inside but all the exterior stuff and roof are going to finish in 2011-12, they didn't want to rush (money was probably being fought over)
and a main stadium isn't important in winter games cause it doesn't holding evens like the summer does with track and field events and soccer

price for reno is almost $400 mil, could have built a nice brand new stadium for that money

Yeah, a few years ago they finally finished paying for The Big Owe.

The cost of security this year is a cool billion.

yup
I think the stadium alone cost, adjusted for inflation, was C$1.6 billion and it was supposed to be retractable
Vancouver spend $600 mil for all their sports facilities, but BC and GM Place were already built

Canadians love their billion dollar, concrete monstrosities. Rogers Centre, anyone?

The Big Owe is kinda cool looking though.

it is cool looking on the outside but its a basement on the inside, makes the SkyDome look fresh and cozy
I head it would cost $500 mil to demolish that thing, renovation cost are probably through the roof

might not have been that high but it was reported at $3 bil last year and that was 3 times the original estimate, its gone up since then

I saw an article that said it could hit $5-6 bil by 2012 but I can't find it

Architects are pretty crafty these days with finding new uses for buildings considered obsolete, so who knows. But yeah, it's pretty horrible inside.

a luger died in training and one of the corners has been a problem for a couple people
the track is too fast, might be a problem for the games
I think they're going to slow it down now

So, the opening ceremonies? Thoughts?

I was actually quite impressed. Canada has a habit of cheapening things, but that wasn't the case tonight. The lip-synching was stupid, but you've got to hand it to k.d. lang, who I'm sure, after being informed that all performances would be dubbed, told them to go fuck themselves, "I'm a singer!". And she's awesome.

Wayne on the back of that truck was painful.

Opening ceromonies were awesome. I've never seen a light show that sophisticated ever. The only downdall to the ceremony was the singing and the glitch at the end. Considering BC Place is a domed stadium we really had to go all out on the interior. Even though the attendance was 60,600 it seemed as if the stadium had over 100,000 in attendance.
