Default Vancouver Grizzlies

This thread is for anyone who wishes to post anything about Canada's 2nd NBA team the Vancouver Grizzlies. We all know they are in memphis but who knows maybe one day Van City will get their team back

The Vancouver Grizzlies, along with the Toronto Raptors, entered the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1995. Both teams were the first NBA teams to play in Canada since the 1946–47 Toronto Huskies. The Grizzlies were originally supposed to be named the Vancouver Mounties, but were forced to find a new name due to objections from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. They then decided to adopt the name "Grizzlies," after the grizzly bear, which is native to British Columbia. Like the Raptors, the Grizzlies paid homage to the sport's founder, native Canadian James Naismith, in their color scheme; one of their team colors was "Naismith blue."[2] The Grizzlies were the first NBA team to have a website, which was created in 1995 by Bob Kerstein, Chief Information Officer of the Grizzlies at the time. The newly-built General Motors Place, shared with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL), would serve as the Grizzlies' home arena for their entire stay in Vancouver.

The Grizzlies were initially composed of players taken from other teams via an expansion draft, together with the team's first draft pick, center Bryant Reeves. However, they were hampered by the NBA's decision to deny the Raptors and Grizzlies a shot at one of the top five picks in the draft. Although they won their first two games in franchise history, the Grizzlies finished with the worst win/loss record in the 1995–96 season, as is typical for an expansion team, and lost 23 straight games from February to April (setting an NBA single-season record now shared with the Denver Nuggets; the overall record of 24 is still held by the Cleveland Cavaliers). In 1996, the Grizzlies drafted Shareef Abdur-Rahim as the third overall pick. However, they continued to struggle and finished with the worst record in the league.

In 1997, the Grizzlies drafted Antonio Daniels with the fourth pick. Still, they finished in last place and repeated this feat again in the 1998–99 season, despite drafting guard Mike Bibby with the second overall pick in the NBA Draft. In the lockout-shortened season that followed, the Grizzlies would only win eight games. In the 1999 NBA Draft, the Grizzlies had the second overall pick again, and selected Steve Francis. Unfortunately, in what became a turning point for the franchise, Francis publicly announced that he did not want to play for the team, citing various reasons. He was heavily criticized for his antics, particularly in Vancouver, and he was subsequently traded to the Houston Rockets in a three-team, 11-player blockbuster deal.

After the NBA lockout, attendance at Grizzlies games began to drop slightly, and the team's owners, Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment (who also owned the Canucks), began to lose money, and majority owner Jeff LaQueef thought it was best to simply cut his losses with the organization. The NBA rejected an initial sale of the team to Bill Laurie (who at that time owned the St. Louis Blues of the NHL) after Laurie openly stated that he would move the team to St. Louis, Missouri. Businessman Michael Heisley then bought the team in 2000 with a promise to keep the Grizzlies in Vancouver. However, attendance at Grizzlies' home games dropped slightly in the 2000–01 season. Fan support increased after it was widely believed that the team would be moved before the next season.

Vancouver Mounties
That would've been good for some laughs.

Yes please, Grizzlies, come back to Van - I support this move

If went to the Steve Nash charity game last year and they were playing on the grizzlies old NBA par quay floor. Vancouver still has the Grizzlies old practice facility in Richmond as well. I believe we have everything it takes to house a NBA franchise.

Can't believe I missed this thread!

The person who should be solely blamed for the demise of the Grizzlies is STU Jackson.

WHat a hunk of crap as a GM.........i almost think he used to spin a big wheel to see what he was going to do

Just a short recap of the blunders he made:
Drafting Steve Francis who wouldnt even come in for a workout and publicly stated he would not come to Canada to play. So what does Jackson do ?Yep thats right draft him anyways!

Drafting Antonio Daniels with the 4th overall pick

Giving Big Country a huge contract extension when he showed he wasnt a starting centre.

Giving mediocre hurt players long term contracts.

Thinking that Shareef Abdur Rahim was a key component to build your team around.

The list goes on and on.

Heisley and Stern swindled the team out of Vancouver...........i wouldnt piss on either of those guys if they were on fire.

As an organization there really wasn't that much wrong. Some questionable GM moves, but the organization itself, aside from slightly below average fan support, wasn't in bad shape. Heisley fucked Vancouver over, through and through. It wasn't supposed to happen.

Bad is bad. I guess there are different degrees of bad, but Vancouver was a horribly run franchise.

You need to go away.

Seriously, alzheimers is debilitating (sp) disease and one of the saddest things a person can be diagnosed with. Maybe you meant senility (something different) but still....not cool.

you take things way too seriously. i accept alzheimers and no it's sad and know that i'll probably get it.

so, it was in all good humour and i'm trying to joke about well im young. i can't feel sorry for people that have it and scared that i may get it for the rest of my life.

seriously, dude do you take into consideration that it's all in good fun?

sometimes you just have to laugh things up to get rid of all the sadness. seriously, depression ruinds peoples lives. loosen up. don't take things to harshly because they aren't meant to be. at least not from me.

don't ya think that since you so often have to write a post asking people not to take things so seriously, that you might, in fact, be the one that's causing shit? how many times have we seen you rub people the wrong way and then tell them to settle down? how often do you see other posters doing that? rarely... and that's because the others seem to understand the general vibe around here while you are intent on just spamming the board with whatever drivel happens to pop into your mind, regardless of what mods and senior members have said over and over again... get it?

ya, i've tooken that into account. but, i just have a different way of thinking and so do many others. so, you guys just don't understand me.

that is why i'm constantly explaining myself. i hope this finally explains that usually when i write somethin that sounds insulting i don't mean it. i'm the constant sarcastic type of person.

i'm no longer going to explain myself or apologize because i have nothing to apologize or explain for. Like I said i'm just different than most of you.
