Loss to New Zealand?

I understand losing to those other teams. we really didn't have any business doing well in this tourny, but now it's just sad.

come on. New Freaking Zealand.

No disrespect, but the country is hardly a good basketball nation. their population is actually less than 5 million.

National team sports programs are a fucking joke in Canada if they aren't played on ice. A JOKE.

well people in Australia, New Zealand actually have government support (financial/infrastructure) and the populous is more outdoors/sports oriented, same can be said with smaller European nations like sweden and holland

I still hold hope cause the new generation, U19's, look much better in tourneys Ive seen
when I was playing ball 10 years ago in Canada the older kids were shite

Australia is one country that we should completely copy when it comes to national programs. They have got it right. They used to be in the same position as us from what i remember (especially when it came to soccer). Gov't got involved, cleaned house and started over and what they have now is something they can be proud of. Sadly Canadian gov't doesn't have its shit together enough or care enough to do anything so get used to it sports fans.

Sorry Fancylad but New Zealand is far better than Canada. They have been good team for a long time.
And do you know their Fiba ranking? It is 13
But i can easily admit that rankings are weird for european teams look at that list:
FIBA.com - Official FIBA ranking

9.China (LOL)
11.Australia
12.Angola (WTF)
13.New Zealand
15.France
17.Rusia
18.Turkey
19.Canada
20.Slovenia

It is weird isn't it?
I know i lost the point about topic, sorry for that

Angola is just that high cause they always play easy teams in Africa, just like when FIFA had USA 8th when they mostly play small Caribbean and central american countries

thanks for pointing out the rankings. I'm totally surprised new Zealand is that high given they haven't done anything on an international stage. I guess beating all those Oceania teams adds to the winning percentage (similar to what windex is saying).

Your list also has me pretty shocked at how low Turkey is given the talent on their team.

You're welcome dude.

Turkish teams (basketball or football) can beat all team with motivation. And we can lose to weak teams easily without motivation. Yes i found that weird too. We (Turks) need to be motivated to move our asses Maybe Hedo was terrible because of that too. I don't know it is culture or genetics and i don't know it is a good or bad thing because when we were motivated we had some successes at past but after that successes we always sank to the bottom

I dunno Hontoni, to me it just shows that a lot of countries are pretty similar when it comes to skill level. you win some and you lose some.

off topic: Oceania as a sporting district needs to be abolished and those countries should just be played in with Asias groupings/qualifiers. Oceania is really pointless. Playing against Fiji and Vanuatu has no business in qualifying for any tournament or deciding ranking.

but its useful when it comes to rugby as Australia, NZ, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga are in the Top 20 and Asia only has Japan
and in soccer the Oceania winner has to beat #5 asian team in a playoff

they might play in a different region cause its a real long trip from say, NZ to Iran

Asian basketball is weak too. New Zealand and Australia could qualify for World cup if they were in Asia grup. You can't escape from New Zealand

Ten Things Americans Know About New Zealand

by Jason Roth

1. Hobbits live there.

2. New Zealanders are a tenacious bunch. They'll walk for kilometers across dozens of rolling hills before fucking a single sheep.

3. New Zealand is basically the Australian Canada. Except that when there's a draft in Australia, no conscientious objector ever wants to escape to New Zealand.

4. If it's not an important enough country for Disney to include as an Epcot Center pavilion, it's not important enough for our history books.

5. You can never pull the wool over a New Zealander's eyes. Chances are, he's already pulled it over his cock.

6. Small, island nations have continent envy. That's why they take it out on those poor sheep.

7. Normally, you'd expect another sheep joke right about now. Unfortunately, there's nothing funny about an entire country with their cocks up a bunch of sheep's asses.

8. The lack of human sexual relations leads a high percentage of New Zealand women to enter politics. Americans can identify with this. Her name is Hillary Clinton.

9. New Zealand has a long, brave history of participation in the first and second World Wars, leading the world in women's suffrage, rugby mastery, and whale hunting. With any luck, the bastards will succeed in conquering the kiwi.

10. New Zealand's most famous actor is an Australian who attacks people with telephones and its most famous hot chick used to sleep with Rod Stewart. Even a list of ten things Americans "know" about New Zealand requires Wikipedia research. Can't you guys hire a fucking PR agent?

Breaking news: I've just seen Canada vs Spain, actually i did not see the end, but 5 mins to the end Spain was up 20 more points. First time i've seen Canada in a long time and don't want to be rude but the sucks even worst than Italy if I dare say it. they looks like kids against grown up man.

New Zealand is good. We are not.

Canada is a program on the rise. Both the men's and women's junior teams have played quite well as of late and the effects of the rise of the profile of basketball in Canada in the last 20 years is now starting to be seen.

It's also funny you mention that they don't care about anything not on ice. I played an event for the RCA yesterday and found out that Canada won 23 Olympic medals in rowing from 1904 to 1988. Since the RCA started making a real push for sponsorship and funding, we've won 25 since 1992.

i was principally talking about team sports (and specifically basketball and soccer as those are the sports are relfective of our major professional leagues well plus baseball). I'm more of a soccer guy anyways, and i can tell you that that program is truly in a horrific state and has been in this state of flux for the last 20 years. Things are bad. It's really quite shocking.

As for the basketball side, i don't follow it all that closely, but probably more than the casual sports fan. anyways my first post was more a rant in the typical toronto fan style than anything based on the sorry performance this team has displayed at the tournament. I get that there's more talent on the way, but we've always had pretty decent up and coming youngsters in the college scene. Much like soccer, i think the program can definitely be better run and be held more accountable.

and lastly don't tell me New Zealand is good. please. just don't.
