You won't find all of the nation's best rebounders atop the raw-rebounds-per game leaderboard. Take Texas' Tristan Thompson, for example: Longhorns coaches told me the Canadian freshman would be a double-digit guy if he were freed up to work the defensive glass -- but he only averages 7.5 boards per game, because he has explicit defensive orders to contest/block any shot in or around the lane, which takes him out of solid rebounding position.

The Big 12 announced their conference awards Sunday, and Tristan Thompson was named the conference freshman of the year. The 6'9" forward from Brampton, Ont., averaged 13.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game with the 'Horns.

Thompson was one of only two unanimous selections onto the Big 12 all-rookie team. Also named to that squad was teammate and fellow Canadian Cory Joseph. The 6'3" guard from Toronto, who played on the same prep team as Thompson, averaged 10.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game with the Longhorns this season.
Joseph scored a career-high 21 points in a win over North Carolina in December.

The Canadian National team is going to be really good with the some young talent. Give it a couple of years, and let the core nucleus develop and play as a team together 1. Now, if we can develop some good young wing players.
