Default Canada vs Dominican Republic

For those who are not aware with Uruguay losing to Brazil today, Canada controls its fate. Beat DR by 5 or more and Canada is through regardless of whether Urg knocks off Argentina.

If Argentina beats Uruguay, just beating DR, regardless of margin, will get us through.

Also anybody heard of Sefton Barrett this guy is freakishly athletic and is Canadian, why isnt he on the Canadian Mens Team, they could use him

SAN JUAN (2009 FIBA Americas Championship) - In a game full of emotions, Canada defeated the Dominican Republic and at the same time grabbed a berth for the 2010 FIBA World Championship. The field is now complete as Canada joins Argentina, Brazil and Puerto Rico.

Jermaine Anderson led Canada with 21 points, Carl English 13, Jesse Young 11 and Levon Kendall 10 with 11 rebounds. Aaron Doornekamp scored 8 points but made two big baskets, key in the Canadian win.

The game was close and full of up and downs from start to finish. The Dominican Republic won the first quarter 16-13 led by Charlie Villanueva who scored 7 points.

In the second quarter Luis Flores along with Carlos Morban led the Dominicans to take a 35-30 halftime lead. Morban led the Dominicans with 8 points while Jesse Young had 7, Jermaine Anderson and Carl English netted 5 each.

Carl English made two straight three pointers to take a 56-51 lead but they never pulled away as the Dominicans came back and ended the first 30 minutes tied at 56.

In the final quarter Canada had some big baskets from long range, especially by Andy Rautins, Jermaine Anderson who completed a four point play and Aaron Doornekamp who got Canada up by four (76-72) with 1:26 left.

Joel Anthony made two free throws with 19.2 seconds left to give Canada a 78-74 lead but Al Horford dunked on an offensive rebound to put the game back by two. Levon Kendall received a foul with 13.9 seconds left but injured his nose, so Andy Rautins made both of them to secure the huge win for team Canada.

Canada hasn't qualified for a FIBA World Championship since 2002 where they finished in 13 place. The Dominicans have missed the FIBA World Championship since 1978.

Luis Flores along with Charlie Villanueva had 17 points each and Al Horford finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Meh, we got real lucky this time around.

They would've won had Garcia been in the lineup.

Jermaine Anderson played a good game. I'm not too keen on the combination of Carl English and Andy Rautins because whenever those two play together they put up to many three's and low percentage shots.

The Canadians were 1-4 at one point in the quarter-final round, but kept their hopes alive with a 97-65 win over Panama on Thursday.

Canada also had to hope Uruguay didn't defeat Argentina, which could have potentially set up a three-way tie for fourth, but Argentina did its part by defeating Uruguay 73-66 earlier Friday.

The semifinals are Saturday, while the gold and bronze-medal games go Sunday.

Brazil, Puerto Rico and Argentina had already secured the first three berths for the world championships.

Rautins hopes the win will silence critics of the Canadian basketball program, which has had to make do without NBA superstar Steve Nash of Victoria and Montreal's Samuel Dalembert, a centre with the Philadelphia 76ers.

"These guys have taken a lot of crap," said Rautins. "They've been crapped on, they've been ignored, they've been put down. Unfairly so, because the people who have criticized them are really not aware of what we're up against in the world of basketball.

"To see these guys achieve this, honestly, it's as satisfying a feeling as I can imagine having. It's tremendous."

That's an impressive victory, even without Garcia. This is something to be exctied about. It's a big step for the program. First time in 7 long years. Steve Nash will be proud.

Especially the fact that their only NBA player, Joel Anthony wasn't even a starter while the Dom. Rep. had Charlie V and Al Horford. Now it's time for the hard part: qualifying for the olympics!!!!!
