Inappropriate content.

Hey mod's and members. I have a suggestion/request about avatars and captions that's been bugging me for sometime.

I would like you to consider putting some restrictions on avatars and captions to accomodate the majority of us that view this forum from work. I'll all for the RFG and SSG's because I can enter those threads at my discretion but seeing half naked women in the avatars is much harder to hide. As for the captions, there are some that are just plain disrespectful and while I'm all for freedom of speech such pointless displays of filth just come off ignorant and potentially offensive.

One current example is:

Someguy again
"is a sire, set the microphone on fire, rape styles vary, carey like mariah"

Now I realize i'm a late 30's white guy and so this isn't going to appeal to me but if that doesn't offend somebody I'm truly shocked at where our society's values are today.

Someguy again might want to have this as the quote that represents him and individual judgement and tastes vary but I appeal to the mods on behalf of common sense that given many of us don't understand(nor desire to) the context of quotes like this they appear extremely offensive and just not cool.

I've given up my quest to educate the masses and raise the collective standard of intellect but there are some lines that just shouldn't be crossed IMO.

Anyways, rant done...please consider this from a common decency and respect point of view.

Thanks

ps...to Someguy again, sorry to pick on you. I find your caption offensive and it just reminded me that I wanted to make this suggestion for some time now.

We do actually police these sort of things and unfortunately we don't always catch everything right away.

In someguy's case I think it's a typo. The actual lyric is "is a sire, set the microphone on fire, rap styles vary, carey like mariah..." which I just fixed for him.

As for the avatars, we have had several instances where we've had to ask members to change them when they are offensive in nature, but might I suggest using the option to turn them off while you are at work.

I do not disagree.

But then, he prolly meant rap.

I guess I could have guessed a typo... but that's how messed up I perceive this world to be now..I actually thought rape was part of the lyric instead of rap. I realize that's not Someguy's problem it's mine, but it's sad nonetheless.

Somewhat condescending.. and really, an excessive E bothers you? Or even the word rape? Since you are such an intellectual, pick up a newspaper or turn on the tube, you'll hear that word on a regular basis.

So you're saying just deal with it? Sure I can do that. I really don't care what random anonymous internet e-identities do or say but the point is it's offensive to glorify things like rape(assuming it was intentionally including the e, careless if not). Just because something is common doesn't mean decency can't prevail on a sports forum and there's a huge difference in reading about something in a news story or seeing a documentary on it on TV from a video or song lyric that makes it seem a socially acceptable practice.

should you be working, at work?

Barracuda 05-05-2010 04:52 PM

I don't think there's any need to gang up on him or anything, it's all opinion. Some things bug some people, while it doesn't bug others.

He brought it up to the mods, so that's that. You can't fight with him about what he finds offensive.

Hey you wanna take shots? Fine. I put myself out there but it was for something I care about. I wasn't flaming anyone.
