Yet another sad story.

Rutgers Student Death – Did Tyler Clementi VIDEO Lead To Suicide

Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old freshman, was a gifted violinist, a quiet young man who kept things to himself. Sadly and tragically, his life was cut short. Clementi’s roommate, freshman Dharun Ravi, and another student, Molly Wei recorded a private moment between Clementi and another man, uploaded the video to the internet, sharing the intimate and private life of Clementi.

In great distress at this becoming knowledge to the world, Clementi took his own life, jumping off the George Washington bridge into the Hudson River.

Before Clementi’ suicide, he left a message on the gay community message board two days after finding the video online.

“He … saw me making out with a guy,” the message reads. “The school (probably) won’t do much of anything.”

Clementi attempted to speak to an adviser at his college, however what was actually done about this is unknown.

Ravi, his room mate, tweeted “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”

Both Ravi and Wei were arrested, and charged with invasion of privacy. Both are now out on bail.

In his final tweet, Clementi said “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.”

Did Tyler Clementi video lead him to take his own life?

Disgusting. Fucking kids should be charged with manslaughter.

I can't believe the stuff that people are "tweeting" these days. Makes me hate the medium even more.

Poor guy. :sigh:

Renihan_00 10-01-2010 12:04 PM

Sad but I don't like the idea of charging manslaughter.

Definitely invaded his privacy but I think there are two greater problems here that are the main issue:

1) The lack of acceptance of gay people in general by society, prompting the belief that keeping it secret was necessary.

2) The lack of comfort with his personal self to stand up to who he truly is.

These greater failings cannot be pinned on the two students who clearly invaded his privacy.

I believe they could get some serious jail time for that anyways. If some of the U.S. "wiretapping" charges that have been attempted recently (one guy beat the change because it was of him filming his arrest in a public place) are any indication, they went for 16 years on one case.

Could be pretty hefty anyways!

While I agree that is absolutely terrible, and those two people deserve to be punished, that kid had to have some mental issues to suicide for that.

TORaptor4Ever 10-01-2010 12:32 PM

Yeah, I know..... manslaughter is a bit excessive.

Just pisses me off to see people do something so cruel and thoughtless.

I dunno Bel..... maybe he just came from a very strict, homophobic family and he thought that his parents would disown him.

If he was just starting to come to terms with his sexuality that would have been a major blow to try to overcome too.

Just don't tough them in any way shape or form, because thats "violent" as well, don't ever utter anything even remotely threatening, thats abuse.

yes, and? because of being disowned you commit suicide?
Bel is on the money here TO, anyone who commits suicide has to have some serious mental issues, including this poor young man.

This part right here got me. Twitter is a viral world. You would think somebody would care enough to meet him at the George Washington bridge to try and stop him.

The kid is still a teen, even at 18. Embarrassment can be one of the most deadly things. Once somebody knows one of your deep, dark, secrets, they don't treat you the same. Now for this guy, the whole world will never treat him the same. The guy was depressed because nobody would ever treat him the same again because of the way gays are judged in this world. I don't think he had any major mental issues, he was just overly depressed and decided he couldn't handle what was going to come of this.

I just don't think it's that simple Insider.... he WAS an 18-yr old kid. And he WAS a freshman in college. That's one of the most trying and vulnerable times in any young person's life.

I won't say that it was EXPECTED that he should have done that... not at all... but I won't say that he should have fit for the looney bin either. He could have grown up and been a perfectly normal guy if not for the horrible timing of this situation.

That's about right IMO... just long enough to really have some time to THINK about your idiotic actions and the impact that they had on an innocent classmate.

Thats having mental issues. And eing gay should not be a dark secret. If the kid though that, thats part of having traumatic mental issues.

But like TO said, being a freshmen in college is a very fragile part of your life. Your rep can make or break your 4 years at that college. And if your rep is being gay, sadly, you will probably not be accepted as well as other heterosexual males.

Belsius 10-01-2010 01:22 PM

Thats all true, but people dont end their lifes for that. They try to survive and move ahead. Its human nature. You dont just surrender and throw your life away. There had to be something more happening in this kids brain.

what "rep" are you talking about? its a school, not a gang
I've been to many schools and gay people are treated fine, its just these specific folks that think its funny

Okay, lets do some roleplaying here, shall we:

Lets say you are this kid, and your 18 years old and are at your first year at college. You don't know many people and your a thousand miles away from home. Nobody knows you're gay because you think nobody will accept you if they find out. So one day you decide to bring a guy up to your dorm. Later, you find out the whole session was taped and is now all over the internet.

How can you not feel like the world is ending if that happened?

GrannyFro 10-01-2010 01:47 PM

Dark knight you use way too much logic for a kid. Go smoke some drugs, tone it down a bit
