To me, you cheer for the hometown team. Whether they are the best, the worst or whatever.

I agree the most die hard fan is the local fan bar none. The local fan that sticks with the team through thick and thin.

If I had to pick a team that is a part of my biology its sadly the Raptors. Baskeball is by far my first sport and the sport I know most about and I think if anyone wins a title I'd be most stoked if it was the Raps. I remember how good the Giants, Jays, Orange felt but man the Raps would be like reaching sports Nirvana.

That loyalty is more important than winning.

See, I think you underestimate the impact of your geographical history. Maybe if you grew up in Leaside or North York you would have been an Oilers fans..... but you might have felt a much stronger bond with the city of Toronto and been a Leafs fan first. We'll never know.

a kid from leaside who grew up in the 80s and is an oilers fan definately was once an glory hunter.

Hey as a kid everyone loved Gretz but you have to realize what your roots are.

In North America we don't take it as seriously but just say if your a Man U fan living in Liverpool there would be problems.

i grew up thinking i was an islanders fan, but those were the bossy days. soon enough i went maple leaf gardens for a few games and by the time i was 10 it was leafs leafs leafs.

with basketball, so many of us grew up without a hometown team. because of this i had connections to individual players, not to teams. when '95 rolled around there was no doubt who the favourite would be. i'd been waiting all my life (never thinking we'd be lucky enough) for a home team.

You know in 81 the Cavs were thinking of moving to Toronto. That would change alot of things if that happened.

Anyways I was a Celtics fan before the Raptors came to town but I changed allegiances quite easily as I was praying for the day Toronto got a team. Still hate the logo and name though but I'll live with it

i think all of us can say that the day Toronto got an NBA franchise, we all become Raptors fans for life.

the same can be said about NFL, if we can ever get a tem here - it will be (for me) the greatest thing that could ever happen, ever!
i will be sleeping in the lineup for weeks to get season tickets, no doubt.

Personally, I just grew up with teams I liked and saw on the television.

I loved Arsenal because I got to see guys like Ian Wright and David Bergkamp play. I loved their non-traditional English approach to soccer and I've been hooked since 1994-95. Prior to that though I was a Liverpool fan because all my friends were.

For baseball, yeah, I was a Jays fan because I was 9 when they won the championship. You're a kid and again you go with the flow. Then in 1995 I became a Yankees fan.

Basketball, I've always loved the Jazz. First because I thought their name was cool, then because they had Karl Malone and then I understood how truly awesome they were when I watched them on tbs/tnt. Raps came along, so geographically speaking, I became a fan of theirs more than the Jazz (hard to watch from so far away). Still though, I find myself cheering for the Jazz.

Football in general is boring if it weren't for the gambling aspect. I'm a Packers fan, but it's a tenuous connection at best. Otherwise than that, it's an incredibly dull experience live.

I totally agree about live.

Well Mine are:

NBA - Raptors
NCAA - Syracuse
NFL - NY Giants
NHL - Leafs
MLB - Jays
Soccer - TFC, Juventus

The home teams are self explanatory. The Giants is because my uncle is from queens and we went to a game with him and my cousins at an early age. Was hooked ever since.

Juventus is because of my dad. As a kid he always got me to watching Juve play. I keep that going ever since then

Espcially a Toronto native who is a Habs fan..... this is just wrong. How about some fuckin' loyalty????? I am struggling through this with my 7-year-old right now. He keeps trying to tell me that Detroit or San Jose (or whoever is at the top of the standings) is his "favourite" team..... and I have to keep telling him that Toronto is his favourite team. Drives me nuts.

Are we not friends anymore then?

Lol.. I was born in Montreal and lived there until I was 6 so that's who I root for. Toronto would be my 2nd though.. in spite of all the hate haha.

As for me rooting for Man U.... Above all else I root for England... and I guess that to me Becks and Rooney were England for me. I could have rooted for Chelsea too I suppose but I can't stand Lampard (choker!!!). Besides.. I have to cheer for ONE team that has a chance at winning something... or else I'd go crazy.
