Toronto Mayoral Race

So anyone following the Mayoral Race? Does anyone know the candidates? Anyone Care?

Well if you live in Toronto you should have some interest. Right now it seems like their are only two big hitters. George (I blew away 1 billion of your money on E-health) Smitherman vs. Rob (I am going to balance Toronto's budge and get drunk at a leafs game) Ford.

The mud slinging is getting interesting (for me anyways) and I really do think this is a very important time in Municipal politics. So anyone wanna comment?

Well here is the latest article on the elections. Mind you non of the topics citizens really should care about are inserted.

Revelations of an impaired driving conviction in Florida apparently didn’t hurt Rob Ford. A new poll indicates the controversial candidate is the front-runner in the mayor’s race.

The poll of 400 Torontonians, which was conducted by Ipsos Reid over the weekend, shows 32 per cent of voters support Ford. George Smitherman, the one-time front-runner, had 21 per cent support among those polled. Sarah Thomson followed with 10 per cent, Joe Pantalone had 9 per cent, Rocco Rossi trailed at 7 per cent, with 21 per cent undecided.
The results suggest large numbers of Torontonians are looking past the 1999 Florida charge for which Ford paid a $664.75 fine. He also eventually worked 50 hours of community service with the football team he was already coaching. An additional charge of possession of marijuana was later dismissed.

The poll also suggests plenty of Torontonians are okay with the candidate’s controversial views about making Toronto a “refugee-free” zone.

But a spokesman for Smitherman downplayed the results. “Typically, when candidates are involved in something controversial it takes five to seven days for reaction to be felt,” said Stefan Baranski. “I’m not sure we’ve seen the impacts of (Ford’s) indiscretions reflected in the polls yet.”

The poll was commissioned by the National Post, Global TV and Newstalk 1010, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Meanwhile, with the poll showing Rossi struggling to crack double digits, campaign manager Sachin Aggarwal has been removed. Bernie Morton has been named as replacement. Aggarwal, according to a provincial Liberal source, had been encouraging Rossi to withdraw

Aar_Canada 08-25-2010 12:08 AM

It looks like he's going to win. The artsy farts on blogTO are up in arms.

I liked Rossi better than any of the rest, but for the first time in a long time I won't be able to have a say because I live about 100 m north of Toronto, lol.

Why does this city constantly elect morons? :cwm34:

'trane 08-25-2010 12:24 AM

there is still the 21% of the electorate that is polling 'undecided' and one or two candidates will inevitably drop out and shift their votes to one of the contenders. this is way to early to be crowning ford mayor.

at least i hope so. :shudder:

Vote Rob Ford baby.

Go against the grain. He is the man for TO. If Mcguinty's buddy Smitherman wins I shall dig a deep hole and be an ostrich for 4 years. All he will do is just spend spend spend

+1 I don't want Ford to be elected. He would not be a good candidate to represent Toronto. I am still disgusted by what he said on CP24. Everyone in this country were immigrants at one point, and not allowing them to come to Toronto would make the economy worse. Plus, the man doesn't seem very knowledgeable. I'm just going to use the statement about immigrants as an example again. Municipal heads do not have any say whatsoever on immigration. That is left to the federal government. Ford says the first thing that pops up in his head, and I don't want someone like that running Toronto.

He just seems low rent to me. Someone who shouldn't be in public office let alone being the mayor of the largest city in the country. Plus we don't need a guy with anger issues who's had an arrest for assaulting his wife.

Your right municipal politics have no say in immigration. Rob Ford may say things that won't digest properly with the public. However; here is a guy who has been in the trenches of municipal politics. He knows the ins and outs of Toronto and he WON'T spend money stupidly. Mayor Miller wasted money by not building the island bridge FIRST day in office. GUESS WHAT? island airport is a success and now everyone but the 0% taxpayers on the island want a bridge to the airport. Air Canada wants dibs on the airport.

Rob Ford won't spend City money stupidly. He may be brash and say things that are out of line but he is an incredible munipal politician.

Rob Ford has been in public office for a long time. Rob Ford's platform has stayed unchanged since the first time he stepped foot in municipal poltics. Rob Ford has never ever spent city money stupidly he only made money for the city (see woodbine live).
