I think it's fine to have one official marathon per major city in a year. No problem. But more than that? come on.

I was out for a walk yesterday morning and there was this lady that was trying to drive into her building on queens quay (i was right beside the car and a volunteer and i could hear the convo clearly). Her entire building was blocked off and she couldn't access her garage She refused to move her car until the volunteer moved the barricade and let her through. Who could blame her? All she was trying to do was go to her house.

Living downtown has opened my eyes to how many times crucial and important arteries and access points into the core are shut down on weekends. It doesn't happen every weekend, but it seems to happen a HELL of a lot. Seems like every second week something major is shut down because of some event or maintenance. It's maddening to have to put up with that shit when you live right in the middle of it. For a "world class city" it's unnacceptable.
Fancy, while it may not be the "Toronto Marathon" it's still considered one of the better marathon's on the Canadian Circuit. Again, Boston and NYC and Chicago all hold various marathon's beyond the recognized ones.

Also, the lady who couldn't get into her building, I'm sorry but it is her fault. If she was given advance notice (likely) then she'd know of it. You make other plans. It's only 1 weekend in the year. I remember when my wife used to live in Burlington and the Ribfest was being held. It was 3 days and parking was hell and she'd just make plans to leave the city for those days or walk everywhere. Hell, why couldn't she just park her car and walk to her building or enjoy the race?

Lastly, it's what you get for living in the downtown core. You want people in your core. It's a catch-22 if you live there. I get that, but also the benefits one receives by holding these events are numerous. While it may inconvenience the individual(s) living there, there are also many convenient things those same residents enjoy. Again, NYC for example, seems to have some event every weekend along 5th avenue or Central Park. It lasts a few hours and then it's over. It's what you get when you live in a larger city.

Exactly.

It's like this man has his head buried in sand or something. Toronto could easily use more streetcars and a better public transit system, yet he wants to do the opposite.

How does that make any sense? Why does he have this incessant need to protect drivers? Are we that infatuated with automobiles today?

my point was that it's not just one weekend in the year. It bloody seems like every second weekend something major is shut down. Realistically it probably is one weekend a month.

Hey i hear you about making plans ahead of time. i did. I do all the time. However, i can totally understand how someone like that lady could have missed it. there are many possible explanations. The city shuts down for too many events IMO.

Hey, if Toronto doesn't want them, I can think of alot of cities in the region who would love it.

And if the lady missed it, too bad, her fault.

If i had my way....no buses or streetcars in the downtown core, period. All they do is fuck up traffic imo. Nothing pisses me off more then being behind a streetcar at a green light and sitting there as the light turns red.

And the winner for the craziest idea is.....

You'd have a tough time in Europe. Really, if I had my way, I'd shut down the downtown core to vehicular traffic and open more it up for pedestrian, LRT type traffic.

It'll never happen obviously. But i hate being in traffic downtown with streetcars. They're horrible and it's only getting worse with the traffic congestion in this city. It's unbelievably frustrating. Ottawa has it right with their public transportation imo. Much smaller city obviously, but their public Transportation is very good.

So what would the solution be? Let's get rid of a service that's far more environmentally friendly then the automobile that I imagine you're sitting in by yourself like 95% of people?

I never understood the need for people to ALWAYS take a care somewhere. When I go Raptor games for instance, I rarely take the car. I take the GO and go from there. If I'm visiting a friend, same thing and the take the sub or streetcar.

I know some people NEED to drive for their work but a lot of people don't need to. Again, we're too attached to the machine. Perhaps we need to begin to sever that connection.

That'll never happen. And as someone that needs his car to work and at times is downtown, i hate streetcars. I too take the subway to go downtown for certain events, and have taken the Go train which are great but i absolutely hate streetcars. They're slow, fuck up traffic and the constant construction that seems to go on with the tracks is just as bad if not worse.

I'm curious as to why things "will never happen". I love absolutes!

To me streetcars and LRT are needed more than buses. If it pisses of drivers, so be it.

You think people will stop driving their cars or cut down significantly?

I think it's an inevitability.

Factor in the rising costs of living and a shrinking middle class with an expanding lower class.

Factor that oil is a non renewable resource and that the price is inevitably going to rise.

Yes. When the last major increases in fuel rose the number of people driving dipped. And our fuel costs are still relatively cheap to other places. If we ever begin paying 2-3 dollars per litre (it'll happen) then yes, I can see less people driving.

There has been an incredible increase in the number of cyclists over the last few years. And I strongly suspect that could easily increase dramatically yet. Policies aimed at drivers at the cost of cyclists and TTC users is not going to net any advances for drivers, because it's going to put a lot more drivers on the road.

Car insurance rates are enough for me to question the sanity of ever buying another car. The zip car sort of idea is brilliant and growing like crazy. There is going to have to be a big shift in how we all live at some point, and this city can either be ahead of the curve, or stuck way in the past.

in this city, very doable. the streets are plowed and we don't get much snow for a big portion of the winter. sure, there are days you can't cycle, but much of the time it's fine.

If I asked you 15 years ago, that the television would no longer be our primary way of viewing television shows and that sales would decrease I'd likely get the same response.

Today, the internet and internet viewing is responsible for the decline in television.

Gradual shifts happen and yes, there are stubborn people who believe everything is a right. But, it's an eventuality.

In a way, in the downtown core i hope you're right to a degree. They seriously need to make changes to public transit here, LRT, GO Train, Subway is great, but streetcars still suck imo. What can i say, i'm also stuborn. I stay away from downtown as much as possible, the congestion with cars, buses, streetcars, cyclists, getting cut off... it drives me nuts.
