The latest poll shows that Toronto mayor hopeful Rob Ford has taken a commanding lead over his field of opposition. The new survey reveals that Ford has a 24-point lead over his closest rival candidate George Smitherman. Torontoís municipal election is nearly one month away and the candidates are attempting to make significant strides in the polls by talking to Torontonians, trying their hardest in the public debates and creating new policies that they believe will help the city.
According to a new Nanos Research poll - commissioned by CP24, CTV and the Globe and Mail - Toronto mayoral candidate Rob Ford has increased his lead to 24 points with 45.8 percent of the vote.
Former Ontario Deputy Premier, George Smitherman, is Fordís closest rival but only has 21 percent of support from the decided Toronto voters. Toronto Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone moved up in the polls to third place with nearly 17 percent support. Rocco Rossi, who has been in the media lately by announcing his newest policies, slid to fourth place with 9.7 percent and Sarah Thomson is last with 6.4 percent.
The poll further shows that Ford has gained support all over the Greater Toronto Area, including Scarborough, North York, Toronto and Etobicoke. The 10-year Councilor has even gained support from people who usually vote Liberal.
The two most important issues facing the city of Toronto, according to those surveyed, are transportation and taxes.
The telephone survey was conducted among 1,021 randomly selected Toronto municipal voters. It was conducted from Sept. 14 to Sept. 16 and contains a margin of error of +/- 3.1.

It looks like the guy can't do or say anything wrong. Interesting days ahead. No more streetcars. Fuck anybody that wants to ride a bike safely. And fill up those potholes instantly while cutting back on the costs.

Has the Tea Party arrived here? Is this all about a desire for much less government and voicing a need to recover those values that were in play when we all looked the same and shared the same history more or less? If so, I will find the anarchist strain a little amusing, even if ironic.

ooooh nooooo!!!!! Toronto ran out of money!!!!

And yet the credit rating went up, along with more cranes than I ever remember seeing. It's obviously time to envy Detroit (a shame what all that socialism did to that city, and yet, well...at least it's not Toronto).

I think we can all take solace in the fact that a city is way more than a mayor. We survived Mel, we'll survive Ford. A city's made up of its people. The streetcars won't go away and Toronto will continue to thrive and grow, yo.

A mayor is only one cog but after witnessing last nights mayoral debate I was pretty much think they are all children. First Smitherman makes fun of Fords intelligence than he goes a step lower and mentions his diseased father.

Stick to the issues people

I thought his father was dead. And he was mentioned in regard to the issue of e-Health, which had it's beginnings under the government in which daddy moneybags was a part. It was a pretty sad attempt at deflecting criticism, but the way Ford made out like it was out of bounds, because his father was dead was even more pathetic. Why is this guy always whining about so many injustices directed at him?

That said - they are all pretty damn uninspiring. Apparently the issues are cost overruns and wasted money, which is pretty much any money that gets spent. I'll be interested in seeing the anarchy that follows a Ford win. Maybe it'll put an end to the megacity, although that originally came about under the guy with the same empty motto of "open for business". If he can cut the police services budget I'll hand it to him. I suspect that isn't even on his radar.

This week’s opinion poll showed that Rob Ford is not only the most popular candidate for mayor, he is also the most trusted. But can you really trust a guy who says so much that is wrong and untrue? Consider just a few examples.

- When he talks about overspending at city hall, Mr. Ford often cites the controversial new bike lane on Jarvis Street. He says it cost $6-million. The actual cost was $59,000, $6,000 less than the city’s $65,000 estimate. The money was used to install bike-lane signs, paint new lines on the pavement and remove the overhead signals for Jarvis’s old reversing traffic lane.

- Mr. Ford says city council voted to spend $360-million to tear down the Gardiner Expressway. No such decision has been made. City council voted in July, 2008, only to launch a study into the future of the elevated expressway. The study was expected to cost about $8-million. Mayor David Miller has made it clear he would like to take down the Gardiner east of Jarvis and one city estimate put the cost at about $360-million, but that is only one option under study and council has never voted to approve it.

- Mr. Ford says that under Toronto’s “tax, tax, tax, spend, spend, spend” government, “residents of this city have been hit with a property-tax increase of 5 per cent every year.” After all the waste that taxpayers see, he said at a debate on Tuesday night, “it just infuriates them when they turn around and have to pay a 5-per-cent property tax.” In fact, homeowners’ property taxes went up 2.9 per cent this year, 4 per cent last year and 3.75 per cent in 2008. There has never been a property tax increase of 5 per cent since Mr. Ford was first elected in 2000.

- Mr. Ford said on CBC Radio’s Metro Morning this week that in 2000 the city had a $6.5-billion budget and “now we have almost a $12-billion budget.” In fact, the city’s operating budget has risen from about $6-billion in 2000 to $9.2-billion today. It reaches almost $12-billion only if you add in the capital budget, which pays for road repairs, transit expansion and other projects. Capital spending was not included in Mr. Ford’s 2000 figure, so his comparison exaggerates the growth in spending.

- In controversial remarks about immigration last month, Mr. Ford said that Toronto’s official plan forecasts that a million new people will flood into the city over the next 10 years. “I think it’s more important that we take care of the people now before we start bringing in more,” he said. In fact, the plan says that Toronto will grow by 537,000 residents by 2031. Greater Toronto is expected to grow by 2.7 million people in that same period, but that includes the whole region, including Halton, Peel, Durham and York.

These are not just sloppy mistakes or slips of the tongue. Mr. Ford makes these untrue statements over and over at debates and campaign appearances. His rivals for mayor have corrected him repeatedly in public, but he keeps on trotting them out as fact..
Can we trust Rob Ford, a guy who gets his numbers wrong? - The Globe and Mail

Not only does the BS get spewed so often and easily, but people, and a lot of people , so desperately want to believe it. And honestly - I don't see the other candidates making the corrections all that much. For the longest time they hoped to capitalize off of the same sentiments. Ford's act was predictable. As for most of the rest, it's quite brutal to see them trying to use the same angle.

I can't believe the cost of repairing the Gardiner every year or every other year, and how nobody ever bats an eyelash over that. And there's so much talk about gridlock, and yet the population is getting stacked up beyond what any improved roads are going to be able to handle.

Its not as if Ford has the ability to do any of the things he is purposing. His staff and supporters make it seem like he is going to get elected and the next day everyone is going to be ponying up to the throne. In 11 years he has been on council he has made 0 friends, he has made enemies with every major union and has been black balled by the provincial libs. You need support to push an agenda. If you are voting Ford, your voting for a 4 year scream match with no results.

Agree. At this point, it's time for all the non-Ford voters to choose an "anti-Ford" candidate. Rob Ford is going to be the next mayor of Toronto, unless all the non-Ford voters (about 55%) agree on one candidate to vote for.

Let's be honest, Pantalone, Rocci and Thompson are not going to win. It's time for their supporters to rally under George Smitherman, so Rob Ford does not represent Toronto.
