Tories command re-examination of O Canada lyrics

Quote:

OTTAWA - All those renditions of O Canada during the Vancouver Olympics seem to have the Prime Minister's Office singing a new tune.

Maybe it was all those women athletes on the podium that did it. Whatever the cause, the Conservative government is not standing on guard for O Canada and has proposed re-examining the anthem's reference to "all thy sons command."

One of the surprises in Wednesday's speech from the throne was a promise to "examine the original gender-neutral English wording of the national anthem.

Stupid!

1) What an oppressed country we live in when our government has time to do things like this

2) I read somewhere else that Jack Layton is spearheading this - anyone surprised?

3) Feminists. Kill. Me.

I think it's unnessesary, but i don't have any special connection to the line in question so i'm rather indifferent.

btw, it may interest other people to know that the last time the anthem was changed was in 1980 when they added the God line.

Acie 03-04-2010 01:01 PM

I think we should change the anthem to one of these.

Yeah - when I first heard about the lyric change I figured this was the line they were going to rectify.

I thought so too, I don't care too much but think it would be the right thing to remove it.

What was it before the God line? Like did they just add the whole line in?

Hopefully they get rid of the god reference so that all Canadians are represented. ~30% of Canadians self-identify as non-religious or non-believing.

Ultimately there are better things that can be done, but the CPC knows how to politik: they've been losing headway on independent female voters, in Ontario in particular, that puts them in a tough spot the next time an election comes up.

So pointless

I have no problem with feminists, but I fail to see how this addresses any kind of feminist issues. It's meant to stir up shit while they get away with lying about torture and doing nothing about the deficit.

Dark Knight 03-04-2010 06:19 PM

No way. I've spent half my life singing this song every morning and its too late to change the lyrics now.

Aar_Canada 03-05-2010 05:40 PM

I think they should come up with an entirely new song. I really don't like our anthem - musically or lyrically. It comes from that stuffy, late 19th century period - all horns and canons - and doesn't really represent us anymore.

I'm surprised they aren't going to just chuck the whole thing and go with that I Believe song from the olympics.

Or they could just go with this one.

YouTube - Worst Canadian national Anthem interpretation

That was unbelievably pathetic. :poopy:

OK make it the Love Boat theme then, with some glowing hearts thrown in. That's pretty much what I sing during the anthem anyways.

Official changes to the English version were recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. The National Anthem Act of 1980 added a religious reference to the English lyrics and the phrase "From far and wide, O Canada" to replace one of the somewhat tedious repetitions of the phrase "We stand on guard." This change was controversial with traditionalists, and for several years afterwards it was not uncommon to hear people (some by choice, some by memory reflex) still singing the old lyrics at public events. In contrast, the French version has never been changed from its original. In fact, at public events where there may be participants singing both the French and English versions simultaneously, it is common to hear people singing the beginning in French and then switching to the English version, usually three or four lines before the end.
I don't know what the big fuss is aboot. I mean, the lyrics were changed in 1980.

Quote:

A return to writer Robert Stanley Weir's 1908 original words means the opening lines would be:

O Canada! Our home and native land!

True patriot love thou dost in us command.

Those gender-neutral words were replaced when a different version of Weir's poem was chosen as the country's official anthem in the 1980 National Anthem Act:

O Canada! Our home and Native land!

True patriot love in all thy sons command.

Changing the lyrics once is lame as hell. Changing them again is just plain rediculous. Leave it to Canada to just go through an Olympics in Canada and show great patriotism and then a week later talk about changing part of the national anthem which was played 14 times with such pride at the games.

Great timing wouldn't you say?

Dude, it's words. I'd like to think our country is more than just a bunch of words some judge scribbled down in 1908. People get very precious and defensive about trivial things, partly because it's difficult for them to break free from what they consider a vital part of our past and because any change with regards to wording (for the inclusive better, I might add) makes them feel that there's some sort of agenda against them. I think that is ridiculous.
