T-Mac: Philanthropist or Self-Promoting Douche?

Quote:

HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston Rockets star Tracy McGrady will swap his No. 1 uniform number for No. 3.

McGrady's old number will go to new teammate Trevor Ariza, the Lakers forward who agreed to a multiyear deal with Houston on July 2.

McGrady wore No. 3 in high school. He is making the switch to promote his humanitarian efforts in the Darfur region of the Sudan and a documentary on his summer 2007 visits to refugee camps in the region. The documentary, "3 Points," is set for release this fall. The title refers to goals of peace, protection and punishment.

McGrady has donated $75,000 to a humanitarian project in Darfur.
He had microfracture surgery on his left knee in late February. Doctors say he needs up to 12 months to recover.

Tmac should look after his illagitimate kid in Toronto, first...

I mean...I know nothing.

Snooch 07-14-2009 02:56 PM

a whole 75,000?

From someone being paid 20+ million a season for sitting on the bench?

Thats like someone making a $1000 bucks a week donating $3.75.

Thats not a donation, thats a tip.

Good no him for promoting the Dafur stuff though.

Gurk 07-14-2009 03:59 PM

He shoulda atleast gave a mil, but he prollly gambled all his money and is broke now...:dead:

Dark Knight 07-14-2009 04:27 PM

Besides the 'if their top player gets hurt' BS that seems to pop up every week, this one is the second biggest one that pisses me off.

He probably donates to multiple charities. 75k is huge for them, and hes probably done more than that for them. I bet if you asked Deke what Tmac has done for HIS charity he'd sing his praises.

Donating that kind of money should be looked at as a great thing, not 'wow thats just 1% of his salary' bs. He doesnt have to give shit and he cares enough to get involved and give his own money.

I think its good athletes keep this kind of thing quiet in terms of charities and people they help behind the scenes, so we dont have to read reactionary garbage like this.

Good on Tmac for helping out.

Ugo Ferst 07-14-2009 04:40 PM

i met him at caribana a long, long time ago, tell u this, he has iron lungs and is a fun guy. I do like ppl that disrespect charitable acts, esp when 90% of them dont give a dime or dont understand its really not a write off.

LX 07-14-2009 04:40 PM

But Thrills - he's making that 20 mill sitting on the bench. He should buy me a steak dinner every night, and feed Darfur for a year before he gets to see any of it. Why must we see the good in things when I want a steak dinner?

LOL, never thought of it that way.

Snooch 07-14-2009 04:59 PM

Whenever I hear about someone donating it turns my stomache. To truely give of oneself recognition is should not be needed.

Mabey its the medias fault, whatever, bt either way this story should have ended with "McGrady has donated alot of money to a humanitrian project in Darfur." Whenever a dollar amount is given it makes me think its more about "look at what I did" than the charity itself.

But still, if this is as important to him as the story makes it out to be, he could have ponied up a bit more than that. Dude has made how much money in the past 4 or 5 years? 100 million or more?

Ugo Ferst 07-14-2009 05:01 PM

do u donate?? Even a little? if not..... stfu

What difference does it make if I do or dont.

And if I told you one way or the other would that not go against what I just typed above your post?

Or did you even read it at all?

it's often the people who don't donate are the ones who bitch and complain about it not being enough. every cent counts and every minute helps.

you can bitch and complain about the publicity that these glorifying articles receive, but do realize that these articles often raise awareness to the charity and increase the funds donated towards it.

good on t-mac

Snooch 07-14-2009 05:16 PM

Not the other one.:dead:

It does raise awareness and that is great.

But I will restate and try to explain myself a little better.

I dont know if it is the media or what, but seeing a dollar amount in these types of articles totally diminishes the action of the donation to begin with. He donated money, awesome, he donated time, even better, he is doing what he can to raise awareness-perfect. Add a dollar amount and for me at least it all becomes sullied.

Even if it was a 10 million dollar donation, although I would be amazingly impressed-I would still feel the same way. But seeing such a small number makes me shake my head.

Bosh donated a million bucks when he signed his current contract. Come on McGrady, Pony up.

But alote of these things turn into Chairity events & then more players and even celebs join in & end up coming to it, & even though there is added donations & contributions from everyone else the guy making 20mill still only donates only 75,000...It is really chump change!
They get fines that are double that and they still don't care! At least give a mill!
If I was makin that much I would atleast donate a mill at least one time!

You know how good that makes u look?

The precise ethical problem with a lot of people that donate is exactly that
