The whole world is out of whack. I mean a few people get millions for playing games or looking good in a movie. A few more get billions by scheming the financial system the way it is set up to be schemed. And people that put in a good, honest days work get less every year in terms of buying power and quality of life.

But I'm not going to be able to change that. It's the people in the latter category that hand over their money to the TMacs and Oprahs and Jeffrey Sachs bigshots and Tom Cruise. Until the whole culture changes there isn't much point in hating on some guy that at least does something. If it's really so stomach turning then look to change this culture into something less consumer-driven and generally stupid. The primary value here is accumulating money. And it's not TMac that made those rules. I think he could feel like he's a better person if he chose other values to a greater extent, but at least he recognizes other values. He's expressing them much more than an MJ ever did, or anybody much else for that matter, by making this documentary. But the celebrity aid thing in and of itself reveals an overall selfishness and hollowness among our society as a whole. Like I said - it's clearly out of whack. It has been for a long time. We've just given up on our power to make change, and given up on our own responsibility to make things right.

too me, people complainging about donations being too small is on the same level as donating 'for the wrong reasons'

I like Belsius more than anyone else in here.

And I dont get why LX thinks I begrudge McGrady for his income.
Good on him I say.

NBA players should be entitled to their cut of what the franchise makes every year as it is the Players who fill the seats no the name of the team.

Now on the other hand I dont think it should cost a $100 per person to go to a game , get decent seats and buy a few treats.

Thats not a donation, thats a tip.

Good no him for promoting the Dafur stuff though.
Oh, so he's making 20 mill a week now?

I don't see how sitting on the bench, well being injured actually, has anything to do with it.

$75.000 is a lot of money. I think it's funny, when multi-millionaires whether they are rappers or ballers or moviestars are spending it like they have it all they get crap for not valueing money but in a situation like this they're too cheap. Can't seem to do it right.

I look at this the same way as Magic-fans who discredit Turkoglu for preferring 15+ million dollar over a 'certain' ring. Greedy bastard isn't he?

Gotta hand it to you, that's a great 'dooddoener'.

There's no good English synonym for it, but it's Dutch for 'evasive argument that kills the discussion'.

I dont care if you donate 1 penny or a billion dollars. The end doesnt justify the means. You have to do this things for the right reasons. We live in such a fucked up society that we glorify people for doing whats right. I have donated and done social work and Im not a better person than anyone for it. Helping should be a RESPONSABILITY not something you do to feel good with yourself or in front of others.

I have no idea what Tmac does with his personal life so Im not attacking him for this but again I wont glorify anyone, specially knowing that a LOT of people do it for the wrong reasons.

my issue is not with the money, but how this got to the media.
A lot of stars will donate and then have their publicist tell the whole world in order to get recognition.

Wow +4 so you're not the only one who thinks that lol.

@ INSIDER: now you're doing the same thing, make public how charitable you are.

In T-Mac's case, making it public serves a purpose: attention will probably raise more money. Hence the jersey # switch.

Secondly, you're assuming T-Mac doesn't donate anything else to whatever charity there might be out there. My bet is he gets approached quite a bit and there's a reasonable chance his percentage is actually higher than yours.

(Your amount is higher than mine so you can pat yourself on the back there but that's not the point.)

I dont care much for celebs and their charity projects either but
1. I don't think McGrady is doing this for his image
2. I think it's stupid to think 75.000 dollars is too liitle an amount to donate

Not only is it still a lot of money, also I think it's ridiculous that somebody is 'supposed' to share at least this or that, i.e. the amount of a donation is not something to judge imo.

It's funny to me discussing this that I also saw a thread that posed the question if Toronto is too politically correct.
Toronto too PC?

i never painted the 75k that Tmac is donating as a bad thing... my response revolved around stars in general making it a priority to tell the world how much they donate to win over fans. I'm not saying they all do it, i'm just critisizing the ones that do.
giving away your hard earned money to charity and less forunate should be seen as a blessing/an honor... not a way to get people to like you or show off. i'm sure Tmac has his reasons for giving his money to charity and i would assume (hope) they are earnest.

Much better post than the PotY imo lol.

I agree. The 75k was not directly at you in that case but it's kind of why I ended up defending McGrady.

My props to INSIDER was more of a inside joke considering most of here have known each other for years. It wasn't in reference to T-Mac's donation, but more of INSIDER telling SJ to STFU. SJ's being telling us to STFU for years, so its refreshing to see when people are dishing it back to him from time to time.

No prob ... most people here feel the same sometimes.

About two dozen or so of us have been posting on message boards together since 2000-2001 starting at ESPN back then.

Oh good lord.

I love it when people get all high and mighty and actually create scenario's that look negatively upon celebrities when they do something nice.

Who the fuck are any of us to actually call a guy out for his donation.

They only do it for recognition.
They only do it for tax write offs.
They only gave this much....

Blah blah blah, who fucking cares, they GIVE money. Lots and lots.

Say what you want, but your 250 bucks ain't 75 grand. And I don't care what the % numbers are, what the fuck, are you actually looking at niceness ratio's now?

I'm all happy that poor people give to charities out of the kindness of thier hearts, hell I gave money to a kid looking to buy crack the other day and felt like a saint, but that doesn't make me better than a rich guy who only gives 75 grand just because it was more of a hit on my bottom line.

Y'all need a bit more Nietzsche in your diets, and a little less Church of the latter day bitch ass whiners club!!!

The ends always justify the means when it comes to charity. T-Mac is a fucking champ if you ask me, Darfur is a great cause to bring attention to.
