Stop The Meter On Your Internet Use

Quote:

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are about to impose usage-based billing on YOU.

This means we're looking at a future where ISPs will charge per byte, the way they do with smart phones. If we allow this to happen Canadians will have no choice but to pay MUCH more for less Internet. Big Telecom companies are obviously trying to gouge consumers, control the Internet market, and ensure that consumers continue to subscribe to their television services.

These Big Telecom companies are forcing small competing ISPs to adopt the same pricing scheme, so that we have no choice but to pay these punitive fees.

This will crush innovative services, Canada's digital competitiveness, and your wallet.

We urgently need to send a clear message to Ottawa, saying that we won't stand by while some of the most profitable companies in the country indiscriminately add new fees to our Internet bills. Enough is enough.

UPDATE: The CRTC just made a decision that paves the way for new internet fees to be added to your bill. To stop this we need to raise our voices now more than ever.

Gurk 01-29-2011 11:31 PM

bladeofBG 01-30-2011 12:33 AM

I juss signed it and sent it to all folk I know in our country.

Windex 01-30-2011 02:44 AM

I've have a cap on how much internet I can use per month for years now. ever since I moved out of the U.S.

N64 01-30-2011 04:57 PM

I'm ok with the 60gb cap that's been around for a while now but apparently Rogers/Bell are planning to make it 20gb/month soon...that's just fucked up.

Nites 01-30-2011 05:05 PM

Time to download as many movies that I possibly can before they implement this.

komot 01-30-2011 07:53 PM

soon it will be pay 2 use like cell phones. signed this and sent to everyone else.

surreyjack 01-30-2011 08:14 PM

Just found out Shaw is implementing a 25 gb limit. What the fuck? I use netflix, and stream NBA games, I pay $50/month already because of this shit I may end up paying double. My cousin is a computer geek he told me it costs them $0.01/gb but they are going to charge us $1 for every GB we go over.

Update:Ottawa to reverse CRTC Internet billing decision - Moneyville.ca

Aar_Canada 02-03-2011 12:19 PM

I hope they make the right decision and protect their citizens from this.

Apparently, the technology's so advanced and the whatevers are so fast now, that it costs the main providers something like a penny and a half per gig. They turn around and charge us a buck.

Edit: Argh, I should have read surreyjack's post.

Taz 02-03-2011 12:25 PM

Yeah, it's totally a cash grab on the part of Bell and Rogers because they are losing money on the cable side of things.

I don't know if the petition did anything at all but I am glad that I signed it, personally.

'trane 02-03-2011 12:33 PM

stevie and his buddies are doing this purely to grab votes, and it's not going to prevent anyone from adding caps and doing per minute billing. it's a vote grab by the government that does nothing to actually stop the cash grab by the big isps. we're getting fucked on both ends.

While I agree with you about the former part of the statement, can I respectfully ask you to leave me be in my optimism about the latter part? :)

Thank you. :)

If this ends up being like the list to eliminate soliciting phone calls, in which case signing up allowed solicitors to use that number and increase the annoying calls ten times over, then I'm going to be pissed.
