Default South Park gives in to Muslim threats

National Review: An Uncensored Look At 'South Park' : NPR

Quote:
Comedy Central's censorship of a recent South Park episode after threats over a caricature of Mohammed is the latest evidence that the West is slowly surrendering, institution by institution, to diffuse but determined demands to suppress anything possibly deemed as blasphemy against Islam.

These demands are new -- beginning only with the Ayatollah Khomeini's 1989 fatwa against Salman Rushdie -- and are little understood by the West. Far more is at stake than a profane and intentionally crude cartoon show.
Quote:
A group in New York called Revolution Muslim promptly posted a message on its website that appears to incite violence against Stone and Parker. It "warns" that they "will probably wind up like Theo van Gogh for airing this show," driving home the point with a graphic photo of the Dutch filmmaker after he was slain by Islamists in 2004. It also includes Stone and Parker's photos and their production company's addresses, as well as pictures of Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Salman Rushdie, Kurt Westergaard, and others who have been targeted by fatwas for purported blasphemy. There is an audio overlay of American terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki reading a fatwa against blasphemy: "Harming Allah and his messenger is a reason to encourage Muslims to kill whoever does that."
I saw this episode and I thought it was pretty lame that they bleeped out alot of the dialogue. They didn't even have to censor as much as they did and apparently that was part of the joke. Would have been better uncensored though.

I really can't wait for the day that fundamental religious zealotry becomes legally classified as what it really is -- a mental disorder

Some vlogger I stumbled across. He makes a couple of interesting observations regarding why and when the image should or should not be shown.

I know why they believe it's disrespectful, they have a point on why they believe it's disrespectful. They also have the right to protest. But that's it, the right to threaten death is crazy.

This, combined with the anti-blasphemy resolutions the Organisation of the Islamic Conference has been getting passed at the UN, is a bad, bad omen for people who take free speech seriously. If we are willing to turn our free speech over to the control of extremists who are not held to rational standards, we are doomed to give free speech away.

I was every bit as upset when every North American newspaper refused to re-print the Danish cartoon.

The sad thing is this group represents the beliefs of maybe 1% of the Muslim population. Maybe 1%.

How can this be allowed to happen? Here this group is in the United States of America and under the first amendment using their right to freedom of speech in order to bash someone else exercising that exact same right. What a joke.

And you know that, while they are using and abusing their right to free speech, some of them are thinking "Death to America" at the same time.

Free speech is one thing, but all this threatening is just so wrong. If they were in the Middle East ... anywhere in the Middle East, even the uAE, they would be arrested for saying stuff like this. Makes me sad.

Also, big props for the bolded statement above, dude. Cheers for not thinking that all of us are nuts.
