Oil is used for far too many common day necessities to be forgotten about. From make-up to deodorants, to garbage bags to transportation for cars. Oil is used for essentially everything around us. Hell, even this keyboard I'm typing on had the letterpad made out of some oil based substance.

PS: I never knew the US was a state?
Next time you fill your gas tank, see how much ethanol is in it. Right now its around 10%. There is talk about it going even higher. Let's say, it begins to comprise of 45% ethanol. Does any state therefore really become that dependant upon crude oil?

To be honest, corn is far more valuable a resource than oil ever is. I'm not saying oil isn't valuable and isn't used in alot of commodities, because it is. However, it wouldn't be far fetched to say that without corn i.e. ethanol, we (as in North America, possibly Europe) would either become severely ill or die. Our reliance upon corn to feed us (not simply corn on the cob, but in meat, vegetables and even fruit) is overwhelming. So to say that corn or ethanol isn't a viable commodity is kinda laughable.

And seeing how the majority of the world is right now seeking to move to the "next big thing" it really isn't that laughable. History is all about adapting, at one point, many believed that the iron age would never end, yet here we are, and we no longer rely upon iron but other substances.

And yes, the U.S. by literal definition is a state or a nation state depending whether you believe in the idea of a nation or note. Seeing as how I don't, I see it simply as a state.

its all of them.

State - Its refers to the political organization. It its a democracy, monarchy, oligarchy, the three branches of power, etc..

Nation - It refers to the cultural, ethnic, etc... aspects.

Country - This Im not sure, its more a general concept, but I think it refers more to the geography of a country.

The U.S. could hardly be considered a nation.

Gas is 85 cents right now here in London, ON.

Kinda makes you laugh when you think about how the powers that be were trying to convince us that paying $1.30 was perfectly justified.

I'll never understand why Canada and the US haven't led the charge to develop alternate methods of fuel so that they shed their dependency on other countries for oil.

Solar power... wind power... gas/electric hybrids... all these things could have been developed 20-30 years ago I'm sure.

Hmmm...... I dunno 'trane.... some of that is true, yes, but I'm still skeptical.

I honestly think that they've been raising prices for a while simply because they know that people will just grumble and pay it anyway... and who can blame them? I've wondered for a long time what price gas would have to get to for people to stop driving or pursue and alternate means of transport.

If I had to guess I'd wager that it's part of a plan to try and help kick start the economy.

'They' is the insidious, dark, secret society of international power-brokers who govern our every move!!!!11111

/ Conspiracy theory

or perhaps supply and demand through a difficult hurricane season and an ongoing set of wars in oil producing nations....

just maybe....

You're a very trusting person... but you have a point and you could be right.

I hope that's the case indeed. But considering how much of big business is based on greed I'm inclined to be wary.

Besides, I think that my explanation would make for a much more exciting HBO special. : D

heh.

in the Quarterly reporting, directly after thighest gas prices we've had in years, because of hurricanes and tornados and locusts and wars and whatever else they like to use as an excuse, all the top oil companies in NA posted huge earnings, with one posting an all time record for quarterly profit earning.

In the last 5 years, while we've watched as prices soar for bogus reasons, oil companies have consistantly watched thier profits, net, not gross, skyrocket. These guys are buying large islands, small countries, they own veru nice Yaghts and state of the art high capacity jets.

but hey ya, they are only just raising prices to keep thier doors open.

I'm not buying it.

Gas is 0,8 Euros here in Greece. Much better than 1,2+ one month ago.
