Default Should the US and their allies pay compensations...

....for the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam war?

This are not really compensations what they are asking for. They want money for treatment and the cleaning of the affected areas.

Its really worthy watching the whole video.

I see its not working so here its the link

They've provided billions of dollars in compensation to American soldiers who were exposed, so the least they could do is help these people clean up the remaining hazardous areas.

The use of chemical agents is illegal in war time.

if thats the case Germany should now be Isreal...
Japan should be able to drop a nuke on America just because...
i can go on....
point is, war happens, you cant expect countries to now feel bad and compensate the countries they were at war with to be nice, and to be fair.

the US went in there to assist South vietnam (at the time) because North Vietnam was communist.
so its not true that they forced themselves in there... South vietnam asked them for assistance.

i realize this is a ignorant rant i'm on, but it happens... war happens....
my uncle was killed in Vietnam... i should go over there and demand the vietnam govt to give me money to compensate me for losing a loved one... sure........thats happening.
its the same shit. people die... its war.

so because the US is rich, and vietnam is poor, lets make them feel guilty and have them pony up some money to take care of us now that we're sick.? thats stupid.

In some areas of southern Vietnam dioxin levels remain at over 100 times the accepted international standard.

All I'm saying is that the Unites States should go there and clean their mess and yes, patly becuase Vietnam is too poor as a nation to do so.

The problem is that the US doesnt have the right to claim they are the "good" side if they dont admit their mistakes and try to compensate them.

I understand the point of what you said. Its ludicrous to think that a nation should pay compensations for their war actions, but IMO, the use of Agent Orange is something diferent. If the US wants to get back any respect from the world they should try to do something about it, because it is such a terrible thing.

You have to see for your own eyes what Agent Orange does to people. I spent 4 years in Vietnam, and I've seen disfigured or crippled people that aren't even in human form.

I actually though the video was pretty "light" compared to other documentals I have seen.

It must be a life changing experience.

Yes they should pay for the damage.

Firstly, they had no business being in the civil war. Secondly, it was a civil war that could have been avoided if some people only listened. If you know your history real well, then you'd know that 1947 - 1952 the war could have potentially been avoided.

Secondly, I suggest people read ideas related to the technocratic war and Vietnam. Essentially, at some point, likely after the Tet offensive, the US General in the United States (must be stressed) decided to utilize technology. Agent Orange was that one use. American scientist had known, go through FRUS documents, the short and long term effects of the chemical and in largely reported military reports; when they were leaving they purposefully sprayed the chemical.

What many need to understand was that this was as close to a race war that the world had seen since WWII. Historically the Americans have/had viewed anyone from the Orient quite negatively. Again, knowing this, no one should be surprised by the actions of the Americans at that point.

Oh and South Vietnam asked for help because the Diem regime was so fucking corrupt that they didn't know how to handle the situation. Even Kennedy saw Diem as a moron. And, small, lesser known fact, Ho Chi Minh, originally wanted the North to be capitalist, but during the Paris peace treaty was rebuked by the American digntaries in 1919 and in 1947 I believe, issued his own Declaration of Independence (phrased that way) that was subsequently ignored by the US in favour of keeping France a happy ally (this can be verified through documents). Minh in his anger realized he needed help to dispell the repressive French regime and looked towards the communist method since the US decided not to. Alot of debate still rages as to how communist were the Northeners. In the opinion of this historian -- not very.

So, yes they should pay for their use of Agent Orange. Yes, they should pay for what they did at My Lai. The Vietnamese were mocked and treated as laboratory rats in a ridiculous proxy war. If this was done to an American child we would be having yearly memorials. Hell, how about a simple apology?
