Default Should fighting be banned in hockey?

I know we have a few guys here who have played the sport, so I'm curious as to what the thoughts on this matter are.

Discuss.

I will never understand how do they allow them to fight like idiots. Play the fucking game and stop messing around.

maybe the players should decide.

Fighting is weird in hockey because it looks controlled/acted because if I was pissed I wouldn't be fighting like that

Personally, it's a ridiculous ritual that sells itself to only a small population. Many would argue it puts fans in the seats of the buildings and to that I say bullcrap.

+1 to both of these. i can't think of any other sport besides lacross (and sports where the principal goal is fighting, like boxing) where you can punch a player in the face and still come back in the game. it's utterly disgraceful. i have no problem with hard-nosed rough play, but the fighting is just ridiculous. those that argue it is necessary for the safety of the stars (enforcing) are ignoring the fact that a large multi-game suspension will do a lot more to discourage violent attacks than a possible black eye from an enforcer.

+2. A fight and a black eye fuels the fire of the Sean Averys of the world - instigators live for retaliation. If anything, fighting is just one big snowball effect.

There's always gonna be fighting in hockey. Always. I'm not an advocate of it, but as long as you have pests out there like Avery, Steve Ott, Darcy Tucker, you're always going to have tempers flaring which obviously leads to fights. Can you phase it out? I'm not sure - but if you tried to, it would lead to more serious stick infractions as retaliation.

disagree. that's what suspensions, fines and correction are for. zero tolerance for dirty stuff. take away their ability to play and a chunk of their pay and they'll stop. for sure.

oh, and drop about 10 teams so the quality of play increases and the enforcers are out of a job.

Bingo.

Fighting in the NHL should be handled the exact same way that the NBA does it.... you fight and you get minimum 10 games. It's ridiculous that people consider it a "part of the game". Hell you can't even get away with fighting in Football and it's one of the most violent sports out there.

You want to fight? Join the UFC. Don't be a pussy and and start whaling on people because you're not good enough to hang with them on sheer skill.

it takes two to tango.

If two guys choose to fight, I say give them a game.

I used to love watching fights in Hockey. But pretty much every fight looks the same. And it's the only sport that allows fighting, in fact it almost promotes it. I think it's gotten rediculous and should be banned. Grown men can't just hit each other cleanly and be done with it?

you're absolutely right jeff. especially that last line. no problems with hitting or toughness, but having that spill over into a fist fight? that's just childish.

This I agree with. But Bettman isn't going to admit failure. He's gonna go down with these stuggling/fledgling franchises.

While hockey is graceful and skill on ice, intimidation is also part of it - because it is a contact sport.

The only way to get rid of fighting is to place heavy sanctions on the guilty party(ies) and made them examples of - suspended for half the season, no pay, Hefty fines on franchises, etc.

sometimes i believe it's warranted, just like in real life. i think until the fans remained seated when there's one happening, the league won't look to change it. tv is one thing, but i've never seen a fan at a game be disgusted by it.

Agree whole heartedly with the dropping 10 teams bit...although, maybe more like 4 or 6. The talent pool is so dilluted that teams round their lineup out with meatheads...

At some point the NHL will rule out fighting. It's just a matter of time. That being said I see the main argument for fighting as cleaning up the game. Take a look at college hockey in the states. No fighting and its the dirtiest league around. So dirty that guys will forego scholarship opportunities to play in just about any Canadian junior league.

sorry fellas. fights are here to stay.
NHL is already on thin ice as it is. income is low, interest is low, money just isnt flowing. they wont do anything that has the chance of effecting ticket sales or tv viewing. the last thing the league will do is take fighting out of the game. the fanbase is the lowest its ever been, they wont want to anger the oldschool hardcore NHL fans. those are the ones that actually pay money and spend time watching games.
