Sex ed in grade 1? WTF

Even Catholic schools must teach sex ed to six-year-olds: McGuinty - Yahoo! Canada News

I think the age is a little bit young to be teaching this kind of stuff.

Dark Knight 04-21-2010 09:46 PM

Fuck, I haven't even been taught it yet. So I took the liberty of learning it myself...:D

Windex 04-21-2010 09:53 PM

sex ed should stay out of elementary school

Dark Knight 04-21-2010 09:55 PM

I don't care how old you are, its hard not to giggle when your teacher says "penis". :haha:

LX 04-21-2010 09:55 PM

I had sex before I got to grade one, so I think it could be quite appropriate.

Gurk 04-21-2010 10:17 PM

I started learning in grade 4but at that time it was just about the body and stuff

Why?

Maybe you need to move to Iran.

bjjs 04-21-2010 10:56 PM

Assuming the sex education taught to grade ones is far different than the sex ed taught to grade eights, it definitely would have it's benefits.

Barracuda 04-21-2010 11:02 PM

What they'll learn in grade one probably won't technically be "sex ed". It'd be more about human bodies and stuff. Simple things.

Not "the penis is inserted into the vagina..." etc.

Exactly.

They're teaching them the names of their parts in Grade 1 and let's face it, by the age of six most kids have already played doctor. I think it's wonderful that they can refer to it as a penis instead of herman the one-eyed german.

I want more personal freedom, if a parent wants to teach their 5 year old sex ed its fine with me
for some parents, they think its too early

all I know was I wasn't concerned with stuff like that as a kid
I was wondering how the power rangers changed costumes and got into those robots so quickly

Kids are actually 6 in grade one and as mentioned, they're only learning the name of their parts. Parents also have the right to withdraw their kids from components of the course they don't agree with, so that freedom does exsist. And, from everything I've read, it's only religious organizations and conservative groups that seem to be up in arms over this. Imagine that!

Didn't you wonder why the pink ranger wore a skirt, and the other didn't?

Even the yellow Ranger, who was a girl, did not wear a skirt. But that's neither here nor there.

I think parents should have some control in what they tell their kids IMHO

'trane 04-22-2010 09:22 AM

i don't understand what the danger is in kids learning some basic anatomy and the actual names for their parts as opposed to just calling everything wee-wee's and vajayjay's and waiting for them to learn it through the porno mag that some 7 year old smuggles into recess.

My 2 year old came into the kitchen to give me a hug before bed last night and he said, "Daddy's peepee...dat's daddy's peepee!" For the record, I was clothed. It's difficult for me because I grew up rather sheltered but I've made an effort to not have Rowan suffer the same fate. I don't initiate conversations, but I'll engage him if he really wants to talk about his or my...pee pee. Those conversations usually end with us staring at each other and me saying, "Yep, that's your pee pee. Hey! Wanna colour?!"

But yeah, it's good to talk. I kinda have to keep convincing myself of that fact, but whatev.

I've always been a big advocate for colouring after talking about pee pees.

It's true.

there's nothing wrong with it, for the reason cuda has already pointed out. the real sex ed begins in grade 5, which is the same age i was taught a little over 10 years ago.

I would have been in love with the female power rangers. Actually I was, Who cares that I was 30 at the time? My big thing was Batman, and I was head over heels in love with Catwoman and Batgirl.

As for conversations about the pee pee - I actually remember being young enough to still need some supervision at bathtime. One time an erection sprang up without me even working on one just for the fun of it (I used to love the magical presto nature of tiny little dick growing a little bit larger). My mother was sitting on the toilet making sure I didn't drown and making sure I actually got myself clean and got out of there before I turned into a raisin. I asked her why it would get all big by itself like that. And I loved her answer. It still applies to so many situations to this day. She said, "I don't know, sometimes they just have a mind of their own".
