Default Seal Hunting: Yay or Nay

I came across this article in the star

Anti-sealing PETA protester smacks Minister with tofu pie - thestar.com

The seal hunt is a sensitive issue to "tree huggers", peta, Native tribes, the general population and of course our own Governor General was seen taking a bite out of a heart of a seal when it was just fished out of water.

I'd like to know what is the opinion of this Message Board. Are you for or against?

An explanation of why is of course encouraged.

Yay.

Seal take one bite out of the belly of the codfish and dont eat anymore. Add that to the sheer numbers of them. In one lone cove off NL I easily saw 100,000 seals lounging on the ice.

Fuck, they taste good too.

my only issue with any kind of hunting, fishing, etc is sustainability.

that is a legit concern, but that is why with some proper research and observation, a number and time can be determined to control the population in regards to hunting

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the seal hunt, but it needs to be done in a humane way (clubbing is fine if it is done right) and must not interference with sustainability. On this last charge, the Canadian seal hunt seems to pass with flying colours. On the former, though, there are some pretty mixed results.

I think the condemnation of it is mostly a politically charged issue, but we should always be cautious to investigate claims seriously and not just write them off as "green propaganda" or something to that effect.

although i do find it sort of disturbing, there is nothing wrong seal hunting per se. clubbing is a fairly reasonable way to dispatch them too. however, i do have a problem with pups being skinned alive, or for that matter, incapacitated larger animals which are still conscious. also problematic is that (to my knowledge) the vast majority--if not all killed animals, are left behind and only the skin is taken. i understand why they aren't, but to me it's still a less desirable and honourable form of hunting, where preferably you'd put as much of the animal to use as possible. this is part of the reason why shark hunting (among others) is so heinous; they are brought aboard only to remove their fins, then thrown back into the water to drown.

i also consider it a positive that places like the european union have banned seal products, because if everyone was open to the idea the market would obviously be exploited and sustainability would become a serious issue. but as it stands, i think it works. there has to be regulation of how many are killed and clear guidelines for killing, that's all.

The problem is that you get one dipshit out of a 1000 hunters who does this sort of thing and thats the footage that the bitches at peta or whatever get ahold of.

I have been watching the same seal beating footage for years and years, if it was so prevalent wouldnt more be doing it?

No everyone I know who hunts seals take the whole animal and eat it. No skinning alive-that is something that Peta started to scare people-just like the fact they dont tell you there are like 10 million seals off the coast of newfoundland alone.

I hate peta...and yeah they can be eaten and used as fashion so your not really wasting life, thats how it is. Just cause they're cute and cuddly doesn't mean they can't be killed and devoured...

damn rabbits are cute as hell but ill still devour the fuck outta it

Well you can either let the Inuit pummel some baby seals to death so they can eat, because they sure as hell can't grow crops up there and it costs Canadian tax payers way too much money to ship it too them. Or you can tell the Inuit and other seal hunting first nations that they have to starve to death or relocate away from their ancestral homelands of 1000s of years because PETA is whining.

While the general mandate of PETA is something I agree with. The members of that organization are largely moronic zealots whom have no sense of compromise.

Great point. No one at PETA is recognizing you have native people who have inhabited that land for centuries. Peta can't turn back and say their anchestors are the people that drive the natives out of their own homeland. I'm sure their isn't a single native that is a member of that group.

Lastly, I bet the Native people up in Artic Canada live overall a more Environmentally friendly lifestyle than those Hybrid driving Peta members.

A Newfie to support what I've been saying for years

God dammit, were made out to take fucking sledgehammers and beat the animals to death. The death's are clean, just like any other game. Only difference is, the animals look pretty. ffs.

Trying to skin a seal alive would be next to impossible. You think the animal is not going to be struggling and biting (they have sharp teeth too, just as sharp as dogs) while you try to skin it.
