Blame the liberals..

No worry though, politics are a pendulum. Trudeau will run in a few years and it will swing back.

i blame the ndp. their rise is a result of the bq collapse, not their own campaign success.

the fact that layton didn't see the danger that a harper majority would pose to everything he has fought for over the last 15-20 years is astonishing, and the fact that he didn't work to minimize that by being strategic about vote splitting is a disaster for all those things hE has always held near and dear. i've voted for his party before, and it will be a long time before i vote for his party again.

this tory majority was won the same way as the last chretien majority - vote splitting on the opposite side. that layton came out of the gate gunning at ignatieff and not at harper did nothing but cement the tory position.

it's great that he made a late run, but most of that comes from quebecers who weren't ready to vote liberal, and who couldn't stomach the tory or the bq again. and all the way through the campaign, in riding after riding, he figuratively stood side by side with harper taking aim at ignatieff in the hope that he could win more seats. well jack, you got 'em enjoy!

I am in Ottawa, overheard at the hotel bar.

"I hope Jack is here more, we may get more rub and tugs, I bet he met his wife at a rub and tug, or Japan"

Hey, i dont pick the people that sit beside me.

Go Sheila Fraser!

The left needs to unite. And if the Conservatives, even as a majority, push their agenda too far, they will pay a price. If the vote splitting continues - and there's no way to prevent it - then the Rovian practices and tactics will win every time.

Ignatieff has resigned. Big surprise. When they picked him to lead, I thought it was a mistake. I don't know if Bob Rae would have been any better due to his past, but people just didn't like Michael it seems.

i will reiterate that i am totally baffled as to why no one trusted ignatieff. at worst he's an intellectual who left canada to pursue a job at the top of his profession, which is something almost any person would do given the opportunity. and for this he was basically branded a traitor. the only reason i can find for the distrust is the effectiveness of the tory propoganda machine and the way that jack layton echoed it for his own gain.

here's an interesting article about the 'hatchet job' done through attack ads:

For Ignatieff, ‘the hatchet job is complete’ - The Globe and Mail

Quote:
The Tory ads were devastating and were made even more so because they went unanswered. Some Liberal advisers had urged Mr. Ignatieff and his team to put up ads of their own, countering the pre-campaign attack, but to no avail.

A document leaked to The Globe and Mail shows how aggressively the Conservatives advertised in the 90 days before the writ was dropped, outspending the Liberals about 15 to one, according to a senior Liberal source.

The document shows the “GRPs” – or gross point ratings – that measure the frequency and reach of ads. In the Toronto market, for six weeks between Jan. 17 and Feb. 21, for example, the Conservative GRP was 1538.5 compared to 131.7 for the Liberals and 11.7 for the NDP.

“We’ve just received the latest competitive TV GRP data from Nielsen in the weeks leading up to the writ,” says a note accompanying the results. “Note the heavy and sustained presence of the Conservative Party. The picture is the same in Vancouver. In Calgary and Montreal French, they had about 600 GRP’s over the same period.”

The Liberal brain trust was warned but did nothing about it. On Sunday night, Mr. Ignatieff said the party didn’t have that kind of money – pre-writ – to spend on ads.

If you are going to do it, he said, you have to “show up.” He noted that the Liberals couldn’t compete with Tory ads being placed during the Super Bowl, the Oscars, the Grammy Awards and Hockey Night in Canada.

he's not a life-long politician. he's an academic. that's part of the reason i thought he was so good and also part of the reason why he was so vilified.

I have a feeling that many find he comes off as an arrogant elitist. And he has a bit of a smarmy, stuffy quality to him.

what do you mean by an arrogant elitist? is that not a characteristic of all politicians? does harper somehow come off as not arrogant? or not elitist? do you get the impression that harper is out there championing the everyman?

and is harper not the quintessential smarmy stuffy guy? isn't that the primary criticism of his communications strategy?

why did this stuff stick to ignatieff and not harper?

I would argue that the reason many may find him as an arrogant elitist is precisely because of the attack ads which seemed to have been running since heaven knows when.
