Real Life Contact: Please refrain

Hello.

I have been contacted on another webpage by someone who uses an NBA related Online name on that site. Please don't do that. Ever.

We are all responsibly online for the safety of identities, I try to keep mine pretty hidden but it isn't hard to track people down. That said, it is NOT an invitation for harassment or insults.

I have been mentioned in the messages, and a close friend and ex-girlfriend as well. I have no choice but to throw up very cautious and SERIOUS guards. Contacting people on the internet anonymously and insulting them is a pretty serious thing to do. We have people in place to follow up on that sort of harassment and I am the type to have that type of harassment followed up.

I take all forms of online harassment serious, and I will fiercely guard the safety of both myself, and my loved ones.

So, as I can be fairly certain the person in question is from this site, I will ask that you please stop, and do not contact me again in the future.

If you think I am kidding, I am not. If you think I am afraid to go to authorities, please re-think. I am quite willing and able to pursue any means i need to that will satisfy my desire to have a safe and enjoyable existence online.

Thanks, and sorry to have bothered all of you with this.

Didn't something really similar to this happen way back on EBS? Got an elephants brain...

The fact of the matter is when you show up online, and are traceable, you need to understand that you are opening yourself up to more potential crazies. It's not justifiable behaviour but at some point you need to weigh out the risks and rewards.

Is the reward of stating your opinion on a basketball site worth it?

You are placing your statements in a public domain and it is the risk you run. Personally, I have little concern about my online identity because the effects are (hopefully) to be confined to the internet. Similar to your statements if things left that sphere I would be an unpleasant character to deal with.

Unless someone is doing something that is illegal, they are allowed to insult you all they want. While it would be nice to control these things, it can't be.

I understand you concern about personal information being shared but when you place something in a public forum, you undertake the risks that your life will further develop in a public forum and maybe in a way you don't like.

I respectfully disagree, and to be honest, you haven't a clue what was said, or how it was said, so, unless it was you that said it, this doesn't really concern you. Hence the;

"sorry to have bothered you all with this".

Did you even read the post. The first statement 100% places responsibility with all of us for our online safety. This is a request to have whoever it is stop. Period. Nobody has the right to contact me personally and both insult me, and to use people names and identities directly. Perhaps it means little to a few of you, I am not so tolerant.

First off, sorry to hear this happened to you, SJ. That's lame. Second, unfortunately, Reni is correct. Even though most of us would like to be anonymous, you never have complete anonymity, and you need adjust accordingly. It's actually rather easy to get the personal info of some RF members, especially the ones who disclose certain details in forum discussions. People need to be aware of that.

Edit - To be clear, I am not excusing any types of harrasment. I'm just agreeing that there are crazies and people need to be cautious what they disclose and where they disclose it.

Barracuda 05-12-2010 12:09 PM

I don't think it's so much about anonymity, it's more about respect.

So yeah, maybe this guy figured out who SJ was on another site. That's no reason to slag him, make comments about personal relationships, or anything of that sort.

That crosses a line.

Superjudge 05-12-2010 12:13 PM

ok you know what, start a thread about this if you need to, i don't need you guys to lecture me on something i readily agree with and have stated already. I am simply letting whoever know it isn't something I will tolerate should it continue.

Sorry if I seem heated, but honestly, there is now disconnect here, and I find it pretty irritating you guys seem to think you need to help me to understand how the internet works.

This thread is meant for one thing, and one thing only.........

To whom it may concern, do not contact me again. if you do, I will consider it harassment and I will do what I need to do ensure that it stops. It isn't science, it's a simple visit to the local Police station.

Yeah, I edited my post at 11:09...literally exactly when you posted. But I still think there will always be crazies. Anyone who pulls this type of douchebag move is probably not going to be reasoned with. This goes beyond basketball fans having some lockeroom humour type fun and takes it to another level. This type of cunt is probably happy he pissed SJ off.

Superjudge 05-12-2010 12:17 PM

probably.

I'm not pissed so much as I worry about things getting out of hand.

Claudius 05-12-2010 12:19 PM

Needless to say, we the staff find this a pretty heinous offense. We take it seriously.

All of us will keep our guard up.

On a sidenote, if any member harasses another on this site, it will be ground for a permanent ban. No ands or ifs about it.

Thank you.

Yeah I read you first post, you said this:

"We are all responsibly online for the safety of identities, I try to keep mine pretty hidden but it isn't hard to track people down. That said, it is NOT an invitation for harassment or insults."

You've said you are responsible for the safety of your identity but never stated that you were willing to accept the risks.

If you are willing to accept the risks, what are you posting this for?

Just because someone is being an asshole to you doesn't mean you need to be a rude to me for voicing my opinion. Again, you put something in the public domain and then say "this doesn't really concern you"...Well then stop putting it in the public domain in a FORUM!
