no. province is a component of a state. nation is something completely different.

are tibetans in china compelled to consider themselves chinese before tibetan? basques in spain? palestinians in israel? there are so many examples.

the machinations of government and the identity of the self cannot possibly be the same thing.

not sure how jeff's olympic example can be defended....

you're wearing a canadian flag. you're representing canada. if you go in with an attitude like that, why are you representing canada at the olympics?

well for one thing, it would be the only way for said athlete to compete in the most important competition of his/her career. If they have cultural identity issues should they not be allowed to compete on the world's stage?

From my experience, every person that i have met that's from Quebec is proud to be a Canadian and a Quebecer. Some consider themselves Quebecers first, Canadians second, but i have not met one who denounces Canada.

Here ya go..

Quote:
Just one day after being named Canada's Olympic flag-bearer, judoka Nicolas Gill has been thrust into the political spotlight.

Tuesday's Toronto Sun has Gill splashed across the the front page, with the headline, "Our Olympic Flag Bearer Voted for Quebec Separatism." The Sun reported Tuesday that Gill told the newspaper in 1995 that he voted for Quebec sovereignty and feels "more like a Quebecer than I do a Canadian."

Gill, 32, will be competing in his fourth Olympics. The Montreal native is a two-time judo medallist at the Games, winning a bronze in 1992 and a silver in 2000. He has also earned three medals at the world championships.

Gill is one of 266 Canadian athletes going to Athens - 134 women and 132 men, plus 77 coaches. Canada sent 311 athletes to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

Sport organizations submitted nominees for flag-bearer last month. The final say came down to a vote by a five-member committee of Canadian chef de mission Dave Bedford, assistant chef Natalie Lambert, two athlete representatives and one coaching representative.
Flag-bearer Gill labeled as separatist

i really don't understand how you can be apologetic to this. it's a disgrace to canada and the non-seperatists. how can canadians cheer for that gold metal when it's wasted away with agenda.

there's a lot of great people in quebec. especially in the tourist districts.

i was talking about this discussion with my roommate earlier today. he's fluent in french. it's obvious he's french. there's no denying he's french. he was telling me about last weekend while he was in montreal, a place wouldn't serve him an ice-t until he ordered it in french. i had the same experience except with mayo.

whatever

you guys can back them up all you want. not exactly sure why, but whatever.

Like i said i'm french, and i've gone to quebec and been treated that way as well. I lived in Ottawa when they took the vote to try and seperate and let's not forget that they came within an eyelash of seperating (1996 i believe). Another example is, my mother works for a call centre and has to deal with quebec residents all the time, well she's french and is constantly told how bad her french is and how she should be ashamed. It really is pathetic.
