I think this is kinda ridiculous. I realize it's a typical thing to say, but what's next? Filing suits against fast food joints? And how much sin tax would smokers have contributed since 1995? Isn't that what the tax is for?

I'll have to search for the study, but I'm fairly certain that cigarettes are a net positive effect on the health budget. They die significantly earlier than the majority, which is beneficial when those 65+ are amongst the heaviest users of the health care system.

I hate that the government thinks it can ad-hoc punish companies for providing services that are seeked out by consumers. a) It's not the companies fault that people began or continue to smoke, b) The government should not be in the business of condoning or penalizing personal decisions that don't harm others. Now some people will complain that their tax dollars are paying for someone else's smoking, but that's what you get in socialized medicine, and I doubt very seriously that many Canadians want to see that end.

I'm no supporter of smoking, but what's next?
Is the Ontario government going to sue themselves over all the patients with cirrhosis of the liver?

Why are cigarettes legal?

tax dollars...they're already paying 15 dollars a pack in Nova Scotia...It probably costs 30 cents to manufacture a single pack!

Cigarettes should be legal because humans should have liberty and some sovereignty over their own body, so long as they are not harming another individual. Let's not get started on smoking bans, either.

The thing is, smoking does harm other individuals. Which is why smoking is pretty much banned in all public locations. But if i'm on the street and walk by a smoker and take in 2nd hand smoking, that's harming me.

I'm all for stopping smoking in public places. A private business, on the other hand, should be able to make its own decision.

You should have the freedom to harm other people, if you don't like it, hurt him back. Burn him with his own cigarette or something since you care so much.

The cigarette companies have carried on like criminals forever. They tweak the ingredients to make it more addictive, they tweak the ads and promotions to hook kids, they start losing customers here so they sell stuff that is more lethal and more addictive, to developing countries, they avoid taxes by sneaking product across the border using aboriginal land that lies along the US border, they lie about the way they work in unison like organized crime, there is just no end of it. But boo hoo for them? Wow. I have no idea how these fuckers sleep at night. They should happily fork over 100 billion to try to make ammends.

I have the solution, as a recently retired smoker. Take the tax money that the government get from smokers and put it into, a "smokers only" health care fund...we would have a smokers only hospital in no time....that way non smokers can stop complaining about the mythical effect that smokers have on the health care system.

I think we should sue people who live without vices, and spend like 20 years in old age homes living to the ripe age of 102, those fuckers are seriously taxing on the system.

People that justify smoking are clueless.

I'd love to sit beside a smoker and let blare an air horn intermittently.

They would say " What the %#$%? Thats annoying and giving me a headache! And it's noise pollution !!"

I think you get the irony.

Both those points are bullshit.

a). Yes it is their fault. They provided the poison. They marketed the poison. They sold the poison.

b) From my own personal experience, my girlfriend's cigarette addiction has potentially harmful effects on our child. It indirectly harms myself as well.

And yes, fumes from car exhaust is a big problem as well. Fast food joints sell addictive garbage as well. I don't see how either provides an excuse for big tobacco companies to sell addictive poison.

You can look at it two ways. One, people should be able to make their own decisions with the information they possess and if they happen to make the 'wrong' one, that's their problem. Or, two, people aren't smart or capable enough to make the 'proper' decision and need protection from other people in the form of denying other people (i.e. cigarette company executives and employees) their freedom to do what they want. When I was younger, it was always the former, but the older I get, the more it becomes the latter.

For example, you chose to be with your girlfriend.

People are impulsive. Selling something that is harmful and highly addictive is wrong.
