Certainly not. On the other hand, the Muslims have the right to practice their religion freely and not be discriminated against on the basis of religion. Clearly this IS a case of religious discrimination, because no other religious groups are subject to this sort of scrutiny. One of the gubernatorial candidates for New York has gone so far as to say that he would essentially seize the land to prevent them from exercising their religious freedom.

is this civil cohabitation you speak of only possible on wounded christian fundamentalist terms? what about the hundreds of american muslims that died in the towers on 9/11? should their relatives have a place to pray and mourn near the site?

you might as well say, since all of theattackers were men, that only females should be allowed within a certain periphery of ground zero. i mean, this was clearly an attack on us femininity.
I was only speaking of opportunity, speaking in abstract i can only agree to the fact that muslim as well as every other religion can built an house of worship wherever they want, and in an ideal world this is not only right but sacrosant(!), but this is not a perfect world so my words. Bytheway i'm agnostic so is not a personal matter

so because the world is not perfect, governments should be able to put aside the religious rights of certain segments of their citizenry at times when people might be unhappy?

isn't this precisely the time when those religious rights should be upheld? isn't that exactly when they becomes most important?

the world will never be perfect. those rights are there precisely because it will never be perfect. taking them away at this point would be extremely destructive to the principles of democracy that americans hold so dear.

You an Ligeia are painting me as a muslim haters or catholic fundamentalist that i'm not. I mean I completely agree with your points and i'm completely opposed with the saying "the aim justify the medium" as Machiavelli says. What I mean you have to think at the consequences before take a decision. I know that the right decision is not allways the more liked

Machiavelli never passed such an anti-Kantian moral judgement; he was simply describing how a the best rulers acquire and retain power.

I don't intend to paint you as anti-Muslim. Much like a person can say something dumb without categorically being an idiot, someone can hold a position that is the antithesis of liberty without being a fascist.

P.p.s. my mother used to be a history and philosophy teacher and I studied philosophy for 3 years (some times ago) but i can't compare to you (and 'trane).

It got the go ahead. So there ya have it folks there is gonna be a Mosque at Ground Zero:

Quote:
A city commission on Tuesday denied landmark status to a building near the World Trade Center site, freeing a group to convert the property into an Islamic community center and mosque that has drawn national opposition.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission voted 9-0, saying the 152-year-old building blocks from the site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks wasn't special or distinctive enough to meet criteria to qualify as a landmark. Commissioners also said that other buildings from the era were better examples of the building's style.

That area isn't even a residential area. I'd love to know how many muslims live in a neighbourhood radius of this new mosque and how it serves the community if at all.

This is all pretty much a disaster.

^^^^

Its just a big cluster fuck. We could sit here and lay out all the bad reasons why this should not happen and it will be coming from people with countless points of view.

Then again the people in support of this mosque could lay out tons of great reasons why it should be done.

The more I think about it the more I think its just being done for the wrong reasons and just don't let this happen. I just vision a redneck hoping in his F150 to NYC and just putting a hurt on that mosque

I can see America has now being taken over from the inside. Mosque at Ground Zero will serve as the fortress for Islam in the West. According to Robert Greene's 33 Strategies of War, #31 - Destroy From Within: The Inner Front Strategy. Infiltrate your opponent's camp. Once there, you do not need to attack or show your intentions. Slowly take over from within.

I think the better way to go is a multi-faith center instead.

Really, we need to accept that we're all human and many faiths, races, and cultures lost lives on that dreadful day.

I don't care what you are, you're a human to me. Everyone on this board.

It's not even at ground zero! It's blocks away for shit sakes. Maybe if they actually had something built in the location itself this wouldn't be such a big deal.
