im thinking a 16 year old breastfeeding in public would be a bit different than a 26 year old.... or at least, it should be.

is there a law that states that a patron must wear shoes and a shirt inside of a restaurant? as far as i know, there isn't. it's both treated as hygienic and as a mannerism to the guests at the restaurant. i don't get this compelling business...

clearly we don't agree, but that's cool. i'm definitely cool with women breast-feeding in public, i just don't agree with open boobie feeding in a restaurant. we can end it here...

there's no biological necessity to not wear a shirt or shoes. that analogy is so far removed from what we're talking about here...

but fine, we disagree.

it would be great if a 16-year-old mother was conscientious enough about the well-being of her child to breast feed it..... i'm rather sure that it is rare.

give me a break. it was your analogy. you need to breast feed. a cape is unnecessary, and considered by many to be demeaning of reproductive and child rearing rights. not wearing shoes is completely irrelevant to anything we're talking about.

why do you have such a bee in your bonnet about a boob?

Well, regardless of weather or not age should matter, it does change people's behaviour in reality. It does not mean it's right; I'm just saying the experiments/studies suggest it will affect onlookers' reactions. Age was one of the components incorporated into ABC's experiment on that show "what would you do."

The consultants (I can't remember if they were sociologists or psychologists...maybe both) predicted that the onlookers would behave differently towards a young looking mother, since that's what supposedly happened in their own research. And, in the long run, over the course of the day, that's exactly what happened in the ABC experiment. When the shop manager harassed the younger mother, she got less sympathy from onlookers, and the shop manager was able to get away with more abusive comments before anyone intervened. The consultants offered a number of speculative accounts for why that might be the case.

i would posit that this has a lot more to do with having a problem with teenage mothers than having a problem with teenage boobs.

Totally possible. Especially when you don't know if people are being honest during follow up questions. You could be right.

Honestly, I was just sort of hoping somebody who was really against it would explain why it's bad. The only time I've seen a mom breasfeed in public was at a location that afforded me the opportunity to walk by and ignore it. So, I never really gave it much thought. But now it's popped up a couple of times. And even though Mayor Katz apologized to the mom's for the pool incident, I haven't really heard much of an explanation for why city employees were bothered by it. All I've heard was "it's offensive to patrons"..."people shouldn't have to see that"....etc...and that's mostly just random people commenting on the incident. To my knowledge, there is no official policies against breastfeeding. *shrugs shoulders*

my analogy was based on the law, not a comparison between the two past that. just because there isn't a legislative law doesn't mean that it can be practiced where ever you please. would you be offended if you were at a friends house and they asked you to cover-up in front of their children? would they be demeaning your wife?

what happened to agreeing to disagree?

here's what i'd do at a friend's house if that happened:

my wife and i would agree to cover up. we'd enjoy our dinner or whatever, we'd go home, and we'd probably not go back. i would be polite, because it is their house and they were hosting me, feeding me, etc, but i really wouldn't be buddies with someone like that because, well, i think they are being ridiculous.

this is mostly because i don't find the human body offensive. this is why i keep mentioning puritans. a breastfeeding monther can't possibly be offensive unless you think that boobs are offensive. do you object to small bikinis on the beach? or is it just the nipple that is offensive? if that's the case, i don't know what you are worried about since when a baby is breastfeeding, except for the moment before the latch happens, the nipple is not in view.

but... this is completely different than a restaurant because at a restaurant i am paying for service, it is not a private residence, and the restaurant does not have the right to discriminate against my family.

i don't really know what you mean by this, but as i just mentioned, a restaurant does not have the right to discriminate against someone for something that is protected by the government under which they live.

breastfeeding is noiseless, odourless, and doesn't come into contact or get in the way of anything anyone is doing, except for the sole fact that they might be offended by the sight of a breast. if that is offensive to you, i suggest that you stay away from beaches and don't go out during the summer. i also suggest that you stay away from insider's babe of the day thread. those boobies sure can be dangerous!

"Breastfeeding in public" is dangerous! Didn't anyone watch "Me Myself and Irene" movie? I could link that scene but i think sucking breast is a little erotic for this forum
