Default Last names

So you have a child, who's last name does he get?

It's all kind of silly.

I've been trying to convince my partner that we need to combine last names, and I'm dead serious.

Personally, I think Smider is a kick ass last name. Snyth is kind of creepy.

I've flown the idea around some other family and friends, and the general consensus is that I'm an idiot.

But once again...I'm dead serious. Should I keep following up on this idea and pursuing a legal change to Smider, or just let it die?

thoughts?

It's your choice. Your child's name is a really personal matter. There is no wrong name you can give them.

There are plenty of wrong names you can give your child, like Omgqtfbbq, or Adolf Hitler, or Cuntface.

Although Smider is not one of those.

However I've been told that inventing a last name for your child is like erasing family history. Personally I think that's ridiculous.

Half of my last name, half of my girlfriend's last name. It would start a incredible tradition imo.

If my mom and dad combined last names instead of giving me my father's, I would be Smartley instead of Smith. My son could be Snytley, which is super badass.

Well I assumed you weren't the type to give you child a derogatory name. I agree with the family history thing being some what ridiculous too. For example, I have my father's last name, but I have always been estranged from his family and see him once a year.

In spanish theres unlimited lastnames, using the first two when you put your name in any document. You get them both from your father and mother. Father first. In Spain, a new law they changed just 2 weeks ago states that the parents can choose the order of who cames first. If they dont agree, they will go in alphabetical order.

Your idea is interesting. As long as you dont put a dumb name of your child its fine. The famiy history argument is dumb. Names are lost constantly, specially the mothers, and you respect your history by loving your family not having a name that will be lost anyway.

i had a similar thought bjjs. we weren't going to combine names, but we almost adopted a new last name for our family by changing ours. in the end the kid got mine b/c the whole thing was too much work, but i strongly support your idea.

I've seen weirder last names.

If your partner agrees I don't see anything wrong with it.

All of my children will have my last name because they have to go through their whole lives with people mis-pronouncing it and making nicknames for it like I did.

Suffering will make them better people. Which is good, cuz whoever their father ends up being, he'll probably be some kind of jerk.

So there.

(Kidding, by the way. Mostly.)

Why would this an issue? If you're a man, then your children WILL HAVE your last name whether your last name sounds funny or not. Like Windex said, "the one who plants the seed names the fruit"

As a person belongs to 1.5 generation from the Philippines, there's no way my kids will have their mother's last name. My children will be the one who will carry on my hopes and dreams so all of them will have my last name. I don't care if my wife/partner's last name is Gretzky, Trodeau, Dion, Pearson, Laurier, Mackenzie-King, Borden or whatever.

I hope Windex's post will make you a man enough and make your partner no choice but have her and your kids your last name.

Smith is pretty badass in my opinion. Simple, gets the job done. I say stick with Smith.
