it actually bores me quite frankly.

You could pretty much insert any of {NBA/MLB/NFL etc etc} in place of NHL, couldn't you? Sad.

It was a case of damned if they do, damned if they don't. They didn't shell out the money, and everyone calls them cheap. On the other hand, had they spent 2.5 million dollars of government funding, there'd be outrage as well. As far as spending money to air movies, that's a huge cash cow for them because of what they get back from selling commercial slots.

I for one, think this whole thing is ridiculous. It reminds me of the flap surrounding Ron MacLean's situation. People were tripping over themselves to sign that online petition to keep a cardboard cut-out airhead on the air. But for what? It's embarassing. Imagine for a sec, some American staying in a hotel in Toronto. He turns on the television to watch the national news and the LEAD STORY is about Canadians, coast to coast, being in an UPROAR over some song.

This woman and her publishing company wanted a huge payout and the CBC wasn't having any of it. CTV wanted publicity and they got it. This song will slowly fade away, and no one will care.

I guess it depends on how much you value tradition.

Unfortunately it is a distinctly Canadian (Toronto especially) thing that we haven't valued tradition. I think it's disgusting how many old buildings were torn down over the years in Toronto and replaced with new structures. As a result we lack a lot of the historical identity than makes Montreal and Quebec City so wonderful to visit.

Hockey is a major part of the identity of Canada, both domestically and internationally.... and HNIC, along with the theme, has been a huge part of that.... so to say it is "just a song" is doing a real disservice to Canadian culture, from where I stand.

Peace!

I agree with you again, but there is a huge difference between this which you mention, and a themesong to a hockey broadcast.

Maybe to you the song is "as important", but i disagree.

as an aside, you know what really pisses me off? The new contruction directly infront of the Royal York hotel which will completely obstruct its view from the lake. Now THATS a freaking outrage.

I couldn't care less about the song. Yeah, it a tradition, but oh well. I rarely tune in on time to catch the intro.
People will move on. Hockey is hockey.

Toronto's becoming littered with condos that are going to look like crap in 30 years. Cityplace, anyone? Oy.

This is friggin nuts, thats all I have to say.

It's friggin Canada's second National Anthem and they're just throwing it away like that? Shame on CBC for that. This is a disgrace to the Canada, right here. I still can't believe this. Even if they do use another song, I wont even bother to listen to it, I will refuse to.

Just disgusting.

I was going to say it's just a song, but I still miss the "NBA on NBC" theme, so while I really don't care I can understand how some could have an emotional attachment to it.

Why is all the blame going to the CBC? Why should they pay 3 million for a theme song?

All it really seems to boil down to is, the representatives for Dolores Claborne (sp) took advantage of the situation and played several parties off one another. Why is no blame being placed on that side of the coin?

And I'm glad CBC didn't shell out that kind of cash.

The amount they sought was tied to the amount that they were suing CBC for.... something to do with the fact that CBC used it illegally for ringtones and internationally.

Ok, that's all fine and dandy, but still to me, it comes down to the fact that the side who owns the song was essentially pissed because it was being "over-used" and wanted proper compensation. Both sides in this debacle are to blame.

I really don't give a damn about the Ceeb anymore, they lost any faith I had in them when the started broadcasting Leaf games in Montreal on Saturday night. I'll never forget the first night I tuned in to watch the Habs, with a few Exports on ice, only to see the damn Leafs on TV. I was so pissed off. That's why in the playoffs, people in Quebec watch the Habs on RDS in French even though the CBC is broadcasting the game in English.

I'm happy the CBC lost the rights to the song. On the other hand, CTV overpays for everything, it's a tradition. The Olympics, the NFL, the HNIC song...it doesn't matter, they just outbid by way more than they need to on everything. As far as the CBC creating that contest where people try to come up with a new theme song, OMG, that is lame. LAME.

I don't think it's lame. It'll generate interest and I'd be curious to hear the stuff people submit - both good and bad. I'll be submitting. Cha ching!

I dunno, maybe their whole treatment of the Habs in Montreal has just gotten me all sour on the Ceeb. That and the fact that they cancelled DaVinci's Inquest/City Hall. That was a good show. Now the only good thing left on there is The Hour.

Anyway, good luck with your entry!
