That's a pretty bold statement that I have to disagree with. If followed in the correct manner, religion can provide somebody with a fulfilling, righteous lifestyle where they help others and do good in the world. The ways religion is used to force ideas and motives is disgusting, such as some Islamic views that are often in the media. However, from my experience, I've learned that there's another side to religious following. I met a great friend in the past year who's a devoted Christian, and she is by far the nicest person I've ever met in my life. There's always a ying and a yang to a situation, and I believe that religion can have a good side, like anything else.

I will agree with you on the fact that religious oppression is disgusting... trying to force your beliefs on anyone is absurd. If you choose your own path, and decide to go with righteous religious views, then all the power in the world to you and I have no complaints.

Yes, religion in a perfect world is a nice idea. However the problem is we don't live in a perfect world, hence religion will always be disgusting. Even christianity in the modern world, when practiced, gets out of hand, not in the sense of limiting your freedom directly (sent to jail, getting killed for disbelieving) but rather limits your thought process. If god is always right, and the writings are there, why question it (him?)? If religious folk really want to go on god's word, then sadly they should be muslims, as mohammad was the last prophet from god, and came with god's last words, meaning the most complete.

Religion is a danger because it slows progress, into something that could very well in the future lead us to our actual creators, if they do exist (this goes out to SJ and prometheus! )

Science, is based on factual evidence, while religion is based on writing. Now I realize historical pieces of writing is technically evidence for something, we can never be sure if they are true or not. Couldn't these writings easily have been forged, and passed on, as man x1000 years ago was very naiive and primitive and wouldn't question as much as we would today. if not forged, then couldn't they have been changed, thousands of times, by people, as so they pleased to? which christianity and judaism have both admitted to by the way, and with the new Koran being discovered in Spain, Islam doesn't even have "original scripture" rooting for it yet.

I could go on and on, because religion just has sooo many different points to write about, and if I hadn't so much crap to do, I probably would write more, and would be delighted in an indepth analysis of this from you and others.
