not totally surprised by that, but i certainly wouldn't take offense. i studied linguistics in uni (although not my main focus). i am interested in the way language develops.

a quote of a comment from the Iran article, made me happy to see not all westerners are ignorant as can be. made me smile actually.
Quote:
Whatever the faults of the current Iranian political system--and they are many--it's nonsense and unhistorical to claim that Iran has had "centuries of religious leaders" running the government, or that the Persians have "always been governed by tribes..." Such notions may or may not be valid when applied to some areas of the former Ottoman Empire in the middle east, but Iran has a sophisticated culture and history older than those of Europe or most other modern nations.

Further, even in modern times Iran had a fairly democratic system until we aided in the overthrow of the legitimate government and helped the Shah gain absolutist power. It was his regime that so oppressed his people they followed the execrable Khomeni in the Shah's overtrhrow and the ascendance of the current theocacy.

Some reading of history is always a good idea for those unfamiliar with the subjects on which they comment
and this one pissed me off quite a bit.

Quote:
After centuries of corruption, did anyone think these countries, led by dictators, might someday change? After centuries of religious leaders ingrained in the government, did anyone think there would be changes? The mid east has always been governed by tribes and competing with religion. Did anyone really believe an election would be clean without interference from the sitting government to the religious leaders, and tribal influence? Wishing it will not make it come true. They are doomed to live in the same manner they have always ruled.
Do they teach nothing of ancient Persia in american schools?

hell they must not, because as i progressed through the grades where history is mandatory, there wasn't a single mention of ancient persia. a lot on china, egypt, rome, greece, but none on Persia. Pretty dumb considering the Persians were the first to recognize women and men as equals, to recognize human right, to develop the first mailing system, the list goes on. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
