i am in n way suggesting that violence should be acceptable, but this is clearly a case of manufactured consent, and it troubles me.

It was never about Black bloc tactics and protesters.

it was about car bombs, suicide bmbers, snipers, and terror opportunities.

The G20 leaders were being escorted away, and nobody even looked on Saturday. I've said it a few times now, the billion bucks wasnt spent on fancy cop gear and fencing. they put up fences for the molson indy. It ws spent on survellence and ground/ air/ water management and protection. CIA/ CSIS intelligence, border screening etc.

Torontonians are so self centered.

Calrly Simon baby...... you're so vain..... I bet you think this summits about you.....

It was the fucking G20, its global, and we couldnt have those guy touched, and you have to have G20's in big cities (i know its a silly political posture, but it exists) to show that you CAN have it in a big city.

It was always about keeping Obama et al from being killed, not about a few idiot anarchists. The cops should have just let um destroy everything if the end result would be all these people licking their wounds, submitting lawsuits, and taking not one spec of responsibility for going down to the site where a fucking riot just about started not 24 hours before
you have been completely hoodwinked sj. they made it about the leaders, who were never in any danger, and you took it hook, line and sinker. and now you don't even care that they passed laws extending police powers without any debate, or that there were 900 arrests - the most in canadian history - when the real threats were estimated at 100-200 people. and now it's even ok to arrest those people that went down to watch simply because they were told to stay away from a public space. hoodwinked i tells ya.

900 arrests, and an estimate of 100-200 violent protesters. seem out of proportion maybe?
I can't post quotes unless I type something.

my biggest problem, obviously from the videos i watched, is that the peaceful protesters did absolutely nothing to stop the black bloc from destroying their peaceful efforts. walking side-by-side, making recordings and yelling in the faces of police officers while these people while they're setting fires and destroying buildings makes you an accomplice.

i read an article about one of the protest leads asking that the masked members to protest peacefully for their particular rally, and they respectfully did. why wasn't this done elsewhere?

she gets a cookie for doing it right
everyone else gets a night in jail for doing it wrong

FWIW

It's interesting to listen to some of these perspectives, especially since they were offered before the events of the weekend unfolded.

Having a designated space far removed from anything that's going on is insulting. It's called not allowing dissent. It's undemocratic, pure and simple. The fence is an insult to all of us as citizens, temporary or not. It says that some of us, a blessed few, are worth so much more than others. Privelege certainly is involved, on one side of the fence, and there apparently are no rights on the other side.

Our police are supposed to be here to serve and protect all of us. But if any of us went within 5 meters of the fence, we were going to be in danger of being arrested by the police force that our tax dollars pay for, simply for standing on the streets that our tax dollars pay for, if we should be so bold as to expect chargeable offenses to be necessary for identification and questioning to be called for.

This idea that we all should have just gotten off of our streets and stayed in some neat little spaces so this complete waste of our resources could go off as a simple assertion of power with ridiculous photo ops is a pretty ugly picture. I think I'll roll over and let Stephen Harper and his friends all have a go at rubbing my belly.

Crowd control is fast becoming more important than serving and protecting. We are seeing people tazed on a regular basis. New technological impositions are on their way. And we are just supposed to roll over, because a few crazies might act out. My distaste for what occurred on Saturday not does outweigh my distaste for how the theatrics were allowed to play out without hindrance, or for how people were treated like shit in general on Sunday.

So essentially what you're saying is that the police should know exactly who the violent protesters are, who the peaceful protesters are, and who the on-lookers are? Even though they were often mixed together?

yes, absolutely. for a police officer to arrest a citizen, they should know exactly who that person is and what they did that was against the law. without question. otherwise, what is to stop them from stopping anyone, anywhere and detaining them without cause? this is a basic principle of law in a free society.

swearing is not a criminal offence. neither is gesticulating wildly.
