i used to call it 'chopping' a book. first chapter, last chapter and skim the middle bits. i found it impossible to do graduate work and still have a social life unless i did this for the books i was less interested in.

Give up the social life. It's more fun that way.

Yay! Less interaction with irritating people! I'm all for that! I feel like I'm becoming less tolerable of peoples' stupidities as I get older.

As an American, I understand that my country really isn't that smart. However, I would like to point out that there are a few Americans who are still reasonably intelligent. More then anything, I hate being pigeonholed as stupid because of my nationality. We aren't all idiots.

Absolutely, you're right ... for my part, if I generalised, I'm sorry. I feel the same way as a Muslim. We are not all Western-world loathing terrorists.

I stopped watching news media a couple of months ago and it's been refreshing.

I don't understand why doctors, engineers , lawyers, etc have to follow a guideline of ethics but news media personnel seem to be exempt from it. It's polluted with hate that always strikes fear in the audience to pin them against another.

I've been the same, after spending so much of my life staying very informed and being interested in the to and fro of political discourse. It really feels like the mob mentality has taken over so much of that now. It's definitely nice avoiding all of it at this point.

And to souternmost's point, I don't find Americans stupid at all (even if they can't spell southern). As individuals they are not all that different from us. As part of a mob they are as senseless as any mob. And the people with the money to spend to serve their own interests have found the mob to be a perfect tool to do so.

Remember the dude from MSNBC that had his little rant on the floor of the stock exchange? How convenient that such rage would suddenly foment and allow hedge fund investors and financial manipulators to use public sentiment to keep regulations from ever coming into effect. So the same people screaming about the bailout have now gone and elected a huge number of people that were bought and paid for by the same institutions that made the bailout necessary. Brilliant. And really, at this point unbearable to watch.

It really is. LX I don't know how old you are but would you say that the fear mongering we experience today is simply a repetition of the cold war days?

I'm old. I remember Nixon. It's not quite a repetition. It's a refinement of the technique, and the media plays a much bigger role. I was disgusted by the first Gulf War, but it proved to be a lesson in how to use the media to much worse ends.

The Cold War was more about asserting power in the far reaches of the world, and most Americans made out ok, even though they were often lied to badly. Nowadays it's all about the top one percent of the income bracket squeezing more and more out of their fellow americans. Before it was all about loving the USA or leaving it. Now, though much of the rhetoric is the same, it's all about the global manipulation of markets to gain insane profits while allowing the rest of us to assume all the risk, no matter what nationality or ideology.

Now I might sound like a bit of a crazy myself, as though I watched too much Olbermann or something. But look at where the money went in the last election a few months ago, and look at where that money came from. The democratic system is badly broken, and power lies in the hands of a select few.

At the same time the US is simply not a superpower as they were before. It's no longer them against the Reds. Now it's a fight for lost status in every sphere - militarily, economically, politically, morally. There is a lot for people to fear quite legitimately, and that provides excellent cover for the leeches at the top that sell out their fellow citizens so easily.

I'm actually more of a conservative then I let on. But I have to agree with most of the political comments you've been making.

Fox News should have never been allowed. There's freedom of the press and then there is slander. That network clearly has a right-wing agenda. What happened to unbiased and well researched journalism? As well, it's clear that they don't even take an effort to do so. They will never get the "intellectual" viewers. So they want to stuff garbage down the throats of the average viewer. Also, I find it disturbing that most Americans find their information solely from news media. Whatever happened to the library? Meeting people? My dad is a classic example of judging someone from another religion/cultural group without even knowing anyone personally from that group.
