Interesting little video on Dubai and it's rise and fall. It's about 24 minutes so it does take a while but really interesting. Worth a look.

I read a piece on Dubai a while ago talking about how modern Dubai was essentially built on slave labour. Contractors from Dubai go into a place like Pakistan and promise Pakistani workers wealth and a higher standard of living in Dubai. Once they're in Dubai, the contractors steal their passports and force them to live in Shantytowns away from the eye of the city. They sleep during the day and work all night, being paid minimally. I'll post it if I manage to find it.

Well, it's a ghost town now. Behind all the glitz and the glamour Dubai truly has nothing to offer as a city. Dubai is literally built on superficiality, and it's hard to sustain any sort of population when that's all there is to your city. You could call it the epitome of a desert oasis.

Thanks for posting this CG.

I'm going to have to let my wife see this as she and her family used to live there in the early to mid-90's.

She continually laments the "Americanization" of it.

I read that same article and I was shocked.

Vowed never to go to Dubai after that.

Is this it? I have this one bookmarked ... I forward it to people all the time. *sigh* I remember how different it was growing up there and how grateful I am to have moved.

My God.... I had no idea.... Dubai was a place that I always wanted to visit.... but I'm honestly disgusted & horrified to read some of those stories.

Rape is dealt with in a messed up, backwards way in a lot of Muslim countries. My roommate used to live in Riyadh and in the case of a rape the onus is on the woman for being overly seductive and provocative. Not really much of a surprise, coming from a country where a man can have as many as three wives.

this video piece has an agenda and it delivers, make of it what you will i guess. there's no question the judicial system is downright scary, but should we really be shocked that it was built on cheap labor, and in some cases, extortion? this sort of thing happens all over the world. it's comparable to product outsourcing. dubai IS globalization. despite its downside, i still think it's a fascinating place of sensory overload, ingenuity, and ambition (the burj dubai is utterly remarkable). i don't think it will ever recover to the production levels it was at 4-5 years ago though i really doubt this place it gonna go to complete shit anytime soon.

You are wrong, it already is shit; did you read any of those stories? It is unsustainable. On a social scale it is so unjust, and as more and more stories come out it will be hopefully and justly shunned; it puts American slave days to shame. Economically they will never recover, they have no resources and if you think the bail-out from Abu-Dhabi doesn't have strings attached, think again. Environmentally a disaster. Idiots I knew that when they built a fukin ski slope in the desert, how smart is that. The desert doesn't quit, it keeps on rolling and eventually your money runs out on stupid unsustainable projects.

I really feel for the poor foreigners especially the Asians and Africans trapped there. I can't understand why their governments won't step in to help them, why our government is not helping that Canadian women out.

If you walk around Dubai 60% of the people are south east Asian so they're not all slaves
Ive seen those camps some of the workers live in, usually a bit further from the city
its the same set up they have in china
every company that brings in people is different, most don't have many rights can get kicked out of the country for something simple like a speeding ticket

how is its social scale more unjust than other countries?
actually. no. it doesn't put american slave days to shame.
dubai may not have resources, but they do generate a lot of money and are part of the UAE. i trust you understand UAE significance.

so i finished reading that article today. pretty scary stuff. That kind of stuff will stay with me for a while.

I still wonder how bad it really is.... I mean i'm not saying the author is exagerrating or lying, but some of those specifics in that article are absolutely horrific.
