Our RIVERS ARE AT RISK! On Monday Feb. 23 our government will be voting to dismantle some very important legislation called the Navigable Waters Protection Act. The NWPA currently grants our waterways protection against harmful development by triggering a federal environmental assessment. If the proposed changes pass the decision as to whether a development on our waterways is environmentally sound or not will be left in one person’s hands, the hands of the Minister of Transport John Baird.

The finance and Transport committees of our parliament are meeting on Monday Feb. 23 to rush and sneak through the gutting of the NWPA. They have attempted to tie the destruction of the NWPA to Bill C-10 under the guise that the protection of navigation rights and the need of environmental assessments delay “Shovel Ready” infrastructure upgrades designed to stimulate the economy.

Experts in environmental law, Ecojustice Canada refute the government's claim that this is necessary and believe that this is just the beginning of “watering down” environmental protection for our waterways.

As time is short and things are happening quickly we must all heed this as a Call To Action.

The Canadian Rivers Network is a coalition of citizens, businesses and environmental groups that are asking that the NWPA be “de-coupled” from Bill C-10 and that amendments to the NWPA be given their due course, consultation and parliamentary process.

Here is how you can help:
1. Visit I Speak for Canadian Rivers for more information on the NWPA issue.
2. Visit I Speak For Canadian Rivers “Call To Action” to follow a comprehensive 4 Step Action Plan to help preserve the NWPA… please visit and act TODAY!
