I'm talking about people in general, not pointing fingers at you. Just saying that English classes are important.

You are right and wrong. English class isn't about spelling and grammar. It's more about understanding literature.

I'm a T.A. for a first year engineering design course and we spend a good deal of time correcting problems students have with writing. The students who did well in high-school english don't necessarily do well in my class.

Take a look at some major marketing companies that hire business majors or math or even computer science majors. Then take a look at what who a good proportion of their clients are.

If I came to you with my company and you didn't know the slightest bit of physics or chemistry, I would turn around and find a new marketing consultant.

If you wanted to major in something that doesn't require you to deal with engineers, scientists, etc. Then I'd understand.

I AM right.

English classes at a younger age are supposed to teach spelling and grammar. A lot of people don't bother grasping it, or they replace it with "internet speak". Reading IS one of the best ways to learn proper spelling and grammar. And if it doesn't work, then schools should re-think their lesson plans and go back to basics.

math doesn't tell you how to be a good boss, or how to relate to humans in any way. it also doesn't tell you anything about past mistakes or lessons learned from predecessors.

and we have computers to do much of it for us anyways.

Well, that's a reasonable point. But, based on my experiences, Yusek has a point. Kids can get 85% or above in high school english and still enter university with serious writing difficulties.

Fair enough ... but then, what's the point of understanding the literature if you cannot express it properly? It's fine if it's a verbal discussion and you don't need proper spelling and punctuation but when you're writing something down/typing it out, isn't it better to understand something AND be able to express it competently rather than understand it and explain it with horrible spelling and grammar?
