speaking of strikes, supposedly in Windsor, they have had a garbage strike for 10 weeks!!!
holy crap... imagine 10 weeks of garbage piling up everywhere? that is insane. i hope we're not in for this type of disaster.
The city of Windsor has been able to organize initiatives to clean up parks, take garbage to landfills, get people on the city's horticulture, etc. There are garbage pileups here and there, but driving through you'd never think there had been a ten week garbage strike.

Logistically, Toronto just can't do the sorts of things Windsor has done.

i've been truly impressed with what windsor has done. i saw a reporter yesterday standing in windsor across the river from detroit talking about how much cleaner windsor was than detroit, even after a 64 day strike. the community has really pulled together.

i actually enjoy paying taxes, and i mean that. every time i see the number i think about how my parents were able to get treatment when they were sick, or how a broken arm doesn't cost me $500, or how my wife will deliver a baby next week and have great care, or how i had a fantastic education for next to nothing. these are good things.

I agree completly. And i think what you're saying is you enjoy the benifits of paying taxes. We all do! But when i get paid and i look at my check and see how much taxes i pay i'm usually not overjoyed.Although i usually get a nice return ever year. But we as a country should never take for granted those things you mentioned. And especially in times like these we're lucky to live where we do.

To be fair, the toilet paper I wipe myself with is cleaner than Detroit on a good day.

Don't get me wrong, i make a good living and am glad to pay my share. And to be honest many take for granted how good we have it, at times myself included.

The LCBO is a government institution run like a giant corporation, with huge salaries paid to the CEO's, etc. They spent 500 million dollars over the past 5 years renovating their stores. Your tax dollars. I didn't see anything wrong with the stores before those renovations. They neglect certain winemakers with their bullshit and in the process, the grape growers. You espouse the company line about their selection and service, when the people who make the wine say things like,

Quote:
Customers could be given broader choice, better service and greater convenience. The LCBO would have to lose its arrogance and sense of entitlement. Let them prove they are entitled to their Sunshine Law salaries by competing to serve their customers and dealing fairly with their suppliers.

Any improvement in access to our own markets would be welcome. Land-based licenses would be a full loaf. A loaf of bread and a glass of wine shared with our fellow Ontarians would be poetry.

Anything would be better than the crumbs we are being left as we watch foreign conglomerates and local bureaucracies eating our lunch, the lunch we work years and generations to earn, but somehow we do not get to enjoy.
--Steve Kocsis, owner of Mountain Road Wine Co.

These winemakers are begging the government to allow some other outlet for them to sell their products. Is that fair? No.

I don't shop at the LCBO. I drink beer so I shop at another travesty, The Beer Store. But I'm sick of the LCBO and their silly masquerade.

taxes are always mispent
its not their money, so they could care less
you know whats better for yourself so its best for you to control your own money
Im not saying we should get rid of taxes all together, but it should be reduced
government has no business sense, just a bunch of lawyers
transport should be privatized, sanatation and mail as well
Im fine with g'ment controlling the military and healthcare (somewhat)

the renovations have actually increased profits significantly, so that was a good spend.

as to the small wineries, i certainly don't oppose some other shopping options, i just oppose losing the lcbo entirely. add boutique local wine stores. great idea. no problem here.

so many things wrong with this, i don't even know where to start. millions of individuals all making separate decisons will not make for good health care, quality roads, good schools. it's been proven again and again and again. i absolutely do not agree with teh statement that it is best for people to control all of their own money. but i am a collectivist, so that's the foundation of my view. we work together as communities to build a good country, not as individuals, who tend to behave selfishly with respect to their finances.

i actually think we (especially businesses), should pay more taxes.

government is not just a bunch of lawyers, but to be honest it wouldn't matter if it was. most lawyers are great business people. they are mostly independent busness owners (or at least have been at some point). this is just silliness.

as i said, i think it's good that it is a controlled substance, and i think it's good that it directs revenue to the gov't. i like 'sin' taxes. i'm open to giving an outlet to disadvantaged businesses to sell around the lcbo, but i wouldn't want that to turn into a free for all.

fyi... the wine rack stores are owned by New York based-Constellation Brands Inc, and sell only vqa wines (although that's a complicated story too)

I say u should be able to dictate your own spending, but thats just me

Im not going to rant about each item
but some taxes are annoying/excessive i.e. death tax
I don't like the fact that I pay taxes for something I don't use i.e. school
why would I pay for garbage pick up when I can dump it when I go to work? (I don't know if its manditory for you)
I just want a say on what I have to spend and hopefully its on something I can use

just give me a checklist, thats all I ask for

I realize I live in a completly different world from unions. I live in a place where my job performance is my only job security, where raises are earned and not entitled, where sick days are meant for days you need off when you are sick, not to be banked as a part of a package.

I live in what we call reality, where higher taxes do not nessecarily mean a higher standards of services. Where a single teired health care system has not existed for some time and yet people think we are the standard.

I live in a place where government gets elected on the backs of unions and then gets held hostage by them

I live in a city that is a figmant of what it was and what it can be.
