Default City plans five-cent bag fee

Toronto shoppers will have to pay five cents for every plastic shopping bag they get from stores in the city under a proposal worked out between the city and big grocery companies.

Industry officials from the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors which represents the large grocery chains have called a news conference today to announce what they are billing as an "alternative proposal" to the city's plan to curb plastic bags.

Council approval would be needed for a bylaw putting the nickel-a-bag fee in place. Instead of being required to give customers a 10-cent refund for every bag eliminated, as the city originally proposed, grocery stores and retailers will probably be able to keep the money.

At the same time, they will need to commit to firm deadlines for sharply reducing or eliminating plastic bags not designed for reuse. That's likely to mean promising to slash plastic bag use by 70 per cent as of 2012, though another proposal would require eliminating throwaway bags totally at some later date.

Well excellent! $0.05/bag is too low though. The price should be increased to $0.15/bag.

No Frills had a 5 cent bag for close to a decade. This should have been done a long time ago.

This is just another way of making them richer. Its cheap enough for people to pay it anyway, If you want to reduce the usage of plasticbags, put them at .50 each.

I totally agree. At 50 cents you would get the whole community bringing in their own bags at every grocery visit.

I know! Lol...this is being covered like it's a new breakthrough idea. Charge more and offer discounts if you bring you own (like Fortinos does).

Yeah, I used to have to buy them at the Price Chopper in Parkdale back in the mid-90's. It was so annoying trying to guess how many you needed. You'd figure it out in your head, pay your bill and then they'd toss the bags onto your pile of groceries. You'd pack up, then realize you needed a couple more.

"Excuse me?" You'd ask the checkout girl you had the crush of a lifetime on.
"Yes?", she'd reply.
"Could I get a couple more bags, please?"
"Um, I'm ringing this person through right now. Can you wait?"
"Yes. I love you."

Anyway, I think recycling and the fear over landfill space is a bunch of bullshit, so screw this backwards ideology and screw Galen Weston, Jr.
