Begs isn't the right word for it. More like encourages. Most of the offering goes towards pay the minister, but most of it also goes towards multiple charities and food banks as well.

1) If you had to go to Church to learn to be respectful of those around you (i.e. neighbours) then I should be slightly concerned, no? That seems to be the most obvious thing a human should do. This makes me wonder, what if you missed a day of church and didn't learn of thou shall not steal? or not killing? Would you be performing those acts if you didn't go to Church?

2) Holidays now have nothing to do with religion for many people. I hate the question, "well don't you celebrate Christmas?" Well it is a national holiday, meaning I can't go into work. I do get to see friends, family and have dinner with them since everyone is free to hang out. This leads to playing games and talking since there's nothing on tv and guess what...I just had a good time. I repeat this every year, so am i celebrating the holidays? Yah. Does it have to do with religion? No.

Take a look at this video, specifically at the 2:57 to 4:00 mark.

I agree with a lot of what Bill Maher says, but he is a condescendent douche. And most of what he says from 2:57 is zeitgeist crap that is not really prooven.

Bill Maher is hilarious and his views on religious i agree with. Deepok Chopra? Isn't he that Meditation/spiritual guru to the stars? The one that's on CNN all the time talking bullshit? Wasn't he an advisor to Michael Jackson?

+1 regarding Maher

He is funny, at times, but also has an unhealthy paranoia when it comes to western medicine and makes ignorant remarks regarding the use of vaccines. He makes fun of Americans for being stupid, yet he says some really stupid shit and doesn't listen when people with actual expertise in the field attempt to inform him of those mistakes.

As for the Zeitgeist stuff, I was wondering about that. It did sound similar to what you hear in that movie. I am not qualified to speak to those claims. But putting the religion aspect aside, Zeitgeist is a total piece of shit movie. It makes many misleading statements and factual errors in the second half of the movie.

I have no problem with them. But keep in mind that the Bible was made in a different time. Long before gays or blacks or women were treated equally. Sure, God doesn't encourage males or females to fool around with the same sex, but that doesn't mean he's going to send each and every homosexual to hell.

So the Bible is outdated and irrelevant to a lot issues today?

Look, I'm not going to pretend that I am some specialist on God or the Bible or something. God's original plan was to have each human being walking around naked in peace and harmony. Then, things changed. Adam and Eve sinned, blah blah blah, you know the rest of the story. Do you think God would get angry at us for wearing clothes now?

well, i don't think a christian god exists, so that's impossible for me to answer.

my point is that if the bible is the unassailable word of god how can one possibly choose which parts to agree with and which not to? and if it is not the unassailable word of god, why should anyone believe any of it?

I'm an atheist. But I never arrived at that from anyone convincing me of anything one way or another. It's something I came to on my own for the most part. And it ain't perfect. I really don't have a problem with anyone that believes in anything if they've come to terms with it on their own, for the most part. For me doubt is the key. If you are some kind of believer without doubt, or are unwilling to profess doubt, then I've got no time for any of that. And the same pretty much goes for not believing.

I think it is doubt and the unknown that allows for Faith to exist, and whether we come at that from a vantage point of believing in some traditional means of dealing with it, or dismissing all of that, there is still something latent in all of us that can recognize the mysteries of the unknown and stop and wonder and have it effect us as we move through our lives.

People that can come together and celebrate that as a community, as long as they aren't unquestioning freaks that are looking for ways to stop thinking, and having others stop thinking, are perfectly alright by me.
